Stop being an invisible expert and grow your personal brand on LinkedIn

Stop being an invisible expert and grow your personal brand on LinkedIn

Ever feel like you’re the best-kept secret in your industry? You’ve got the expertise, but no one knows you exist. Nowhere to be seen online. It’s not about lacking talent or knowledge—you just haven’t positioned yourself to be seen. Right now, you’re invisible to the customers who matter.

This is the Invisible Expert Trap, and it’s holding you back. You’re doing the work. You’re delivering results. But customers, money, and new opportunities? They’re slipping through your fingers. Recognition and growth aren’t happening, not because you’re not good enough, but because no one sees you.

The Cost of Staying Invisible

Why is this happening? Because you haven’t made time to market yourself. Likely, it’s a lack of time, or a lack of marketing skills. Either way, you’re a ghost online.

To get ahead, you need to shift gears—and your mindset. You need to position yourself as the go-to authority in your field.

You want people to say, “I’ve heard you’re great at [insert your field]. I need your help.”

If people don’t know you’re the expert, they’re not coming to you for answers. Meanwhile, people with half your experience are succeeding because they’ve made themselves visible. They’re on social media, sharing stories, dropping videos or/and podcasts, making sure they’re seen by the right audience.

Think about the last time you saw a competitor’s post. You knew you could’ve done it better, right? But guess what? They’re the ones getting the attention because they’re putting themselves out there. They are the ones showing up.

Doesn’t that frustrate you? Good. Now do something about it.

Here’s How To Position Yourself as a Thought Leader

At The Trusted Voice, we talk about positioning a lot. It’s part of the PACE framework: Positioning, Audience, Content, and Engagement. To get you recognise, let’s starts with a few key tactics:

1. Niche Down: Find Your Entry Point

You might have a wide range of skills, but why do people come to you first? Pinpointing your entry point is the first step to making yourself visible.

For example, if you’re a marketing consultant, do people come to you for social media, branding, or SEO? Find the specific area that pulls people to your expertise, and use that to build your authority.

Personally, I have a broad skill set across business, product, and marketing, but the door people knock on first is always for personal branding and content marketing. That’s my entry point, and it’s what I use to stand out.

  • Also, meet Philippe Guichard - A design strategist who turns innovative product ideas into multi-million-dollar businesses. See how niche is focused on design and products?

2. Build Authority Through Content

To break free from the invisible expert trap, you need to consistently show your audience why you’re the expert.

Creating authority-building content—whether it’s articles, videos, or case studies—demonstrates your knowledge and positions you as a trusted leader. Share insights, results, and practical advice that highlights your expertise and keeps you top of mind. Here are some experts:

  • Meet and follow James Banks - He increases marketing ROI using SEO AI.
  • Connect with Tam Nguyen - She's sharing videos and thoughts on logistics + ecommerce in South-East Asia.

3. Leverage LinkedIn More Effectively

LinkedIn is underrated platform to establish your authority as a thought leader. Treat it like a marketing platform. Where you regularly share value-driven posts, engage in meaningful conversations, and connect with others in your industry.

Don’t just promote your services—offer insights, share your experiences, and be present.

  • Be like Casie Lane Millhouse - She’s using LinkedIn video to connect and bring attention to venture funding and AR/VR.
  • Follow Christopher Kong, CFA - For his business, he is leveraging LinkedIn to share networking and communication tips.

4. Showcase Your Wins

Worried about coming off as too braggy? Don’t be. It’s not enough to just be good—you need to show it. Don’t be afraid to share your client testimonials, project successes, or industry recognition. The more visible your achievements are, the stronger your positioning as a go-to expert.

  • For example, Alan Crabbe , recently post about launching his new business baby here.
