Stop Dimming Your Light: Why Brilliant Women Need to Speak Up

You know what’s exhausting?

Watching brilliant, capable women hold back, dimming their light because they feel they don’t deserve to shine.

It's like having a lighthouse with a 100-watt bulb but switching to a 40-watt because you’re worried the ships might find you too bright.

Well, I’m tired of it, and I bet you are too.

The Silent Epidemic

Everywhere you look, there are women with incredible talent, innovative ideas, and powerful voices.

Yet, too often, they choose to stay silent in meetings, pass up on opportunities, or downplay their achievements.

Why?

Because they’ve been conditioned to believe their worth is tied to being agreeable, humble and non-confrontational.

From a young age, many women are taught to be "nice," to not rock the boat, and to make sure everyone around them feels comfortable—even at their own expense.

This ingrained behaviour often carries into adulthood, especially in professional settings where speaking up can be seen as aggressive or unfeminine.

The Cost of Silence

When women hold back, it’s not just their voices that are stifled—it’s the potential for innovation, progress and positive change.

Every time a woman chooses silence over speaking up, the world loses a bit of its brilliance.

Companies miss out on diverse perspectives that could drive better decisions.

Teams lose out on leadership that could inspire and motivate.

And, perhaps most importantly, young girls lose out on role models who show them that it’s okay to be bold and outspoken.

Breaking the Chains

So, how do we break this cycle?

How do we encourage women to own their brilliance and speak up without apology?

Here are a few of my thoughts:

  1. Reframe Confidence: Confidence isn’t about never feeling fear or doubt. It’s about feeling those things and choosing to act anyway. Let’s reframe confidence as courage and resilience, rather than a lack of self-doubt.
  2. Celebrate Voices: Create spaces—both professional and personal—where women’s voices are actively encouraged and celebrated. This means not just listening but amplifying their ideas and contributions.
  3. Mentorship and Support: Establish strong mentorship networks where experienced women can guide and support others. It’s about building a community that lifts each other up.
  4. Challenge the Status Quo: Question and challenge the norms and stereotypes that keep women in the background. This means calling out biased behaviour and advocating for systemic changes that promote equality.
  5. Lead by Example: Be the woman who speaks up. Your courage to shine brightly can inspire others to do the same. When you step into your power, you give others permission to do the same.

Unleashing Potential

Imagine a world where every brilliant woman feels empowered to share her ideas, where she stands tall in her truth, and where her light shines as brightly as it’s meant to.

That’s a world filled with innovation, empathy and unstoppable progress.

We can’t afford to keep losing out on the contributions of brilliant women.

So, to every woman reading this: stop dimming your light.

Speak up, stand out, and let your brilliance shine.

The world needs you just as you are—unapologetically bright and beautifully bold.
