#261: Stories that Coach: "Surprises"

Introduction

Today, on the "People Skills" newsletter, we're showcasing some of our favourite "Stories that Coach" anecdotes.

We're great advocates of using stories to illustrate important lessons. When we run workshops up and down the UK, we always include 2 or 3 well-chosen anecdotes in the course.

Often, in reviewing our workshops, trainees will say that the anecdotes are some of the best and most memorable parts of the programmes.

For today's newsletter, we've chosen 10 anecdotes from the "Surprises" collection.

They all celebrate the idea that there is nothing certain in life and that we should always be open to the unexpected.

So, here are our 10 anecdotes, each with a learning twist...

01. A Bird in the Hand

Many years ago, in ancient China, the disciples of a wise master decided to play a trick on him. They selected one of their number to pose an unanswerable question...

04. You Know What To Do?

The new boss, on his unannounced getting-to-know-you tour came across a broken piece of equipment.

Asking an operator what was wrong, the operator replied:

"It's the belt. It over-heats."

"Oh, really. Can't we prevent that?" asked the new manager.

"Of course. It just needs a coolant adjustment." And he explained in detail how to do it...

05. Floating Ideas About

In 1879, the Proctor and Gamble company's best seller was candles. But Thomas Edison had just patented the electric light bulb. Within a short space of time, the market for candles had collapsed and the company were in trouble...

06. Unlikely to Succeed

In "Survival in the Executive Jungle", Chester Burger tells the story of W Maxey Jarman, the dynamic executive who built the $400 million corporation Genesco Inc. and became its chairman. Writer Alan Fowler tells the story of his first job as a junior personnel officer when he was given the task of single-handedly taking on a storekeeper. So concerned was he to impress, that Fowler conducted all the interviews himself, a task that was really too much for one person...

08. A Run on Roses

A man had an opportunity to buy 40,000 roses, individually wrapped in cellophane. He bought them and put them in a refrigerated room while he set up a network of students and casual workers to blitz every restaurant and bar in the city the following weekend ('buy a rose for the one you love')...

09. The Bishop's Gift

Once a church had fallen upon hard times. Only five members were left: the pastor and four others, all over 60 years old.

In the mountains near the church there lived a retired Bishop. It occurred to the pastor to ask the Bishop if he could offer any advice that might save the church...

10. Don't Overlook the Obvious

A customs officer at the Mexican border noticed a man coming across one day on a bicycle with two small sacks tied to the handlebars. He naturally got suspicious and asked him to open the sacks, but when he did he found nothing but sand...
