Storytelling Tips #7

Welcome to Storytelling Tips, edition 7.

Actionable ways to level up your storytelling, with me, Maryam Pasha.

1.

Zoom out. 🔎

You’ve been talking about the details, now zoom out to show the big picture.

You started your talk strong, the middle conveys the bulk of the material... but how to close?

Zooming out is a great way to close your talk, as it helps the listener bring together the smaller sum parts of your stories into one over-arching narrative.

For example, in Donnel Baird’s TED Talk, Why you should ditch deadly fossil-fuel appliances, he zooms out to show how individual actions can stack up to create systemic change:

”…if we can electrify one building, it means that we can electrify a whole block of buildings. If we can electrify a block of buildings, it means that we can electrify a neighborhood. If we can electrify a neighborhood, it means that we can electrify a city. And if we can electrify a city, that means we can electrify a country.”

How to close? Zoom out.

2.

Public speaking for social impact.

Why generosity is at the centre of every great speaker's mission.

I was honoured to join Ravinol Chambers 's new podcast Storytelling for Social Impact to share public speaking techniques and approaches to help you level up.

We cover:

🤝 What has generosity got to do with great storytelling?

🌎 How can we tell better climate action narratives?

❌ When and why should you consider doing a TEDxTalk?

During our conversation I talk about some great communicators: Katharine Hayhoe , Jodie Jackson , Kris De Meyer , Payzee Mahmod , Sahar Zand , TEDxLondon .

Celebrate new storytellers.

Join TEDxLondon January 26 to celebrate new storytellers taking to the stage to share their ideas.

Exciting news – this January TEDxLondon is back. 🎉

Tickets are now live for TEDxLondon’s Festival of Ideas on 26 Jan 2025. We've curated an incredible day of talks, experiences, and workshops to unleash the transformational power of ideas and stories.

Why a Festival of Ideas?

London needs something new.

The magnitude of the challenges we face in London, the UK, and the world cannot be addressed by staying in silos or separated communities.

That’s why in 2025, we’re bringing our communities together to celebrate the best of London in a new 'Festival of Ideas' format.

I'm so excited to be a part of this community writing a new story for our future, together, and hope that you'll join us in that journey.

About me

I believe in the power of storytelling: 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫.

But not everybody knows how to 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤, 𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧.

That’s where I can help you.

I'm Maryam Pasha, and I help take some of the world's biggest, most challenging, complex and important ideas and transform them into high-impact stories.

I work with billionaire philanthropists, award-winning academics, business leaders, activists, and students: anyone who wants to tell better stories, and tell stories better.

I’m passionate about supporting a new wave of leaders to communicate new ideas with the impact required to bring about systemic change – within organisations – and the world.
