The strange paralyzing power of secondary benefits

The strange paralyzing power of secondary benefits

This sentence reveals something rather disturbing about human beings.

"The majority of people would rather endure a problem than apply a solution, which requires effort and time, which would definitely solve their problem."

You might think everyone is willing to do what it takes for their health, but the reality is different. Take a look around you.

Think of a friend you've advised to move around a bit more to lose weight but who will not listen?

Think of someone who should have quit smoking before developing lung cancer.

Think of a loved one who complains incessantly about his health problems and uses them to let others do the daily chores for him and make them feel obliged to take care of him.

Secondary benefits. This is the scientific term for all the benefits a person derives from being "sick." In short, others do the work and manage his life for him.

It's a common phenomenon among people on sick leave with excellent insurance coverage. Why return to work when you can stay home and get paid?

Of course, not everyone is like that. And some people need help.

Secondary benefits are a fact of life and lead many people to wallow in their problems.

When you propose a solution to their problem that involves them investing time and effort, they will always find a problem with your solution because they want to maintain their secondary benefits.

Looking around and condemning others for their lack of willpower is straightforward. But on your side, are you facing a situation you'd like to change? If so, what are your reasons for not acting now? What secondary benefits are linked to these excuses?

The only way to move forward is to leave the excuses behind and take full responsibility for our health by managing our lifestyle habits wisely and intelligently.
