Strength training – the not-so secret engagement weapon available to gyms
There is no doubt that the fitness industry is evolving and adopting a more holistic approach to wellness.
At Snap Fitness, we recognised this shift early and moved towards a model where our gym offer focuses on the positive effects that physical fitness can (and will) have on our members’ overall wellness. By emphasizing the intrinsic benefits of exercise – such as increased energy, reduced stress, improved mood, boosted mental health and enhanced self-confidence – we are tapping into a deeper, more meaningful motivation for all.
A more holistic approach, however, doesn’t mean that there is no more space for a gym to “be a gym”. In fact, quite the contrary.
I passionately believe that, as gym operators, we can provide consumers something they can’t get anywhere else.
For example, a lot of people are telling us they want to feel stronger, which is great. I do a lot of travelling and everywhere I go and talk to people, the message is the same – strength training is quickly becoming “the new cardio” in clubs, gyms and studios all over the world.
What’s really interesting about the increased demand in strength training is that the trend spans not just across all geographies, but also covers all age groups and fitness levels. Everyone loves it. As a result, strength training equipment – whether it’s selectorized equipment or free weights – has become among the highest in demand.
It’s not just anecdotal evidence either. Industry data backs what we are seeing.
A report by the Physical Activity Council shows that approximately 60% of gym-goers include some form of strength training in their routine. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) reports that strength training is now among the top five fitness trends globally. Moreover, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) noted that the percentage of adults engaging in muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week increased from 17% in 2008 to nearly 30% in 2020.

My personal opinion is that one of the main reasons for this trend is the fact that people are less likely to have decent strength training equipment and/or machines in their homes.
The “pivot to digital” might have migrated a portion of the cardio training from the gym floor to the home and open spaces – but that can’t be said about strength.
At Snap Fitness, we’re keen to stay ahead of the curve, rather than follow others. That’s why, as part of our repositioning which started in 2021, we have reduced our cardio areas by 20–30 per cent and given that space over to strength, functional training and open floor space. In addition, our digital content helps people build confidence faster, meaning these spaces are well used.
In recognition of the diverse goals of our members, we also work with members to create tailored strength training routines that align with their fitness targets, whether it’s building muscle, increasing strength, or improving overall fitness. This can be delivered through our Snap App – which is free to all members. The data and goals they input results in the app suggesting workout plans that will help them achieve their targets. Users can then also track workouts and progress.
Additionally, to ensure our strength training offer is engaging and accessible to all, we have introduced various group classes focused on strength and conditioning. These classes, such as HIIT and boot camps, incorporate strength training principles to provide a dynamic workout experience.
Also, because understanding the importance of proper technique is crucial when it comes to strength training, we provide educational resources and workshops on strength training. These resources help members learn about effective workout strategies, injury prevention, and the science behind strength training.
For me, it’s no surprise that strength training has become a staple in fitness routines worldwide. From a Snap Fitness point of view, our proactive approach in enhancing our strength training offerings ensures that we will remain at the forefront of the “strength revolution”, providing members with the tools and support they need to achieve their training goals.
