Strengthening Defence ties with Russia: Impact in Defence Local Manufacturing

Despite India’s access to the global market of defence manufacturing, evolved from a buyer-seller relationship to the joint research and development of advanced defence equipment like Brahmos missile, Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft and T-90 tanks, India-Russia defence ties still remain strategic to optimize India’s defence manufacturing to the full extent enhancing the nation’s manufacturing interest.

‘Vocal for local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission,’ made India’s defence relationships with foreign countries multi-directional and diversified.

India has been continuously inking many agreements with global defence players such as US, France and Israel to strengthen and empower the fleet of Indian Defence manufacturing.

The defence partnership has been undertaken by diverse defence partners of India in recent years in the form of lucrative investments and joint manufacturing operations. But still, accounting for about 70 per cent of the Indian arsenal, the Russian Arms fleet stands substantially in supplying the military hardware and spares, thus meeting the test of the strategic partnership with India.

Over the last five years, gaining technological advantages over the rival countries, there has been a ceaseless modernization of India’s armed forces, as evident in the reports that India is targeting to export military products worth Rs 35, 000 crore in the next five years.
