Study: Internet Trends - 88% of Americans consult their smartphone while watching TV

According to a recent study by Mary Meeker, just under 90% of Americans use their tablet or smartphone ... while watching TV.

Because viewing a single screen is not enough, it seems that we are more and more using our smartphone, while watching a TV program in the living room (or elsewhere).

TV or smartphone , it's necessary to choose ?

For example, the Mary Meeker firm indicates that 88% of Americans use a second screen (smartphone, tablet, ..), while they are already watching television.

In detail, a little over 70% of respondents announce using their smartphone to conduct web searches for the program being broadcast. They would look for the filmography of an actor, other films to credit the director or the age of a particular character.

A little over 40% of respondents also use their smartphone to send messages to friends and family. We can also imagine that social networks, including Twitter, are widely used, to comment "live", a program, a series or a sporting event.

The smartphone, TV killer?

The firm takes the opportunity to put forward that Americans spend an average of 3.30 hours of their day with a smartphone and / or a tablet. It's a little more (+0.3) than last year, and much more than a decade ago, when the smartphone was otherwise less time-consuming than it is today.

Recall that the use of smartphones and tablets has largely contributed in recent years to erode the consumption of other media, including television. This does not prevent Americans from spending more than 3:20 each day in front of their television.
