Subconscious Commerce - Retail Trends 2025

Subconscious Commerce is using your data to not only understand and predict, but inspire consumer behaviour. Why inspire? In our Personalisation in Retail Report I identified Three Levels of Personalisation - Relevancy, Intimacy and Inspiration. Inspiration is the only level that not only responds to who your customers are now, but empowers who they can be in the future. Subconscious Commerce is the approach that allows you to get into your customers’ psyche and understand them and their needs, wants and desires even better than they can themselves. 

How? This is where psychology comes into play. When you can map out what a specific set of data points tells you about your customers’ personality, attitudes and motivations, you can then use the deeper expertise to predict and inspire the future of their behaviour. Yes, AI is our tool here, but it is only as good as the humans who are using and designing it and this is where psychology is a crucial differentiator between good and better (read more in my recent LinkedIn post here).

Knowing what people might do and even directing what they will do in the future means you can plan your product buying and manage stock more effectively, reducing costs and waste, design your marketing campaigns way ahead and use more accurate marketing effectiveness testing methods, design your retail stores to better suit future needs and wants of customers. The effect? Less waste, more targeted spending, more effective brand, marketing, advertising and CX initiatives, more impactful design, more personalised and localised experience ultimately leading to increased sales and profits.
