Engaged, Supported Parents Make A BIG Difference

Why parents matter

Ultimately, all parents want what is best for their children, and a strong parent-child relationship is vital for raising a happy confident, resilient & well-balanced adult with strong self-esteem and positive mental health.

Schools can’t be expected to provide parental advice for parents and carers, but ongoing research shows that family engagement in schools improves children’s achievement, reduces absenteeism, and restores parents’ confidence in their children’s education.

Students with involved parents, or other caregivers, earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, and show improved behaviour.

They are less likely to fall into gangs, take drugs or suffer anxiety.

They have:

  • More confidence and greater self-esteem
  • Higher attendance rates
  • Lower risk of exclusion
  • More enthusiasm for learning
  • Better results
  • Are happier

John Hattie’s seminal study, ‘Visible Learning’ found that “the effect of parental engagement over a student’s school career is equivalent to adding two or three years to that student’s education”.

That’s why it is so important that schools work in partnership with parents, from a child’s first days at school right through to when they leave.

When schools and parents listen to each other and work together, it has a really positive impact on attainment and student well-being.

“Parental engagement is a powerful lever for raising achievement in schools. When parents and teachers work together to improve learning, the gains in achievement are significant.’’ Harris & Goodall University of Warwick 2007
