Summer travel hacks / Identify your personal style

Hello, LinkedIn connections!

As you may know, I write a popular email newsletter called "Five Things Making Me Happy," where I share insights, observations, and practical tips to help make our lives happier.

Today, I'm pleased to share three of the five tips from my upcoming "Five Things to Try This Month" newsletter. Subscribe now to get all five tips delivered to your inbox tomorrow.

Five Things to Try This Month

  1. Train for a tough transition. On a recent episode of Happier, we shared this hack: When facing a challenging period or transition in your life, think about how you might shore up your resources, support systems, and healthy habits to get through it. We received many responses from listeners about how they’ve used this strategy—for pregnancy or parenthood, the “open door” or “empty nest” stage of life, starting a new job, the death of a loved one, a surgery, a military deployment.
  2. Identify your personal style in three words. This idea comes from stylist Allison Bornstein: Choose three adjectives that define how you want to show up in the world. These words can be a helpful guide when clearing out your closet, shopping for new items, and putting together outfits. My words? Simple, sophisticated, and saturated (I love to wear beautiful colors).
  3. What did you do for fun as a child? May’s theme for The Happiness Project: Revisited course was “Play,” and participants enjoyed discussing this Know Yourself Better question. Consider how you might incorporate a favorite childhood activity into your life now. Some ideas from course participants: Build a pillow fort, go fishing, do a crossword puzzle.

If you found these ideas valuable and want to read the remaining two suggestions for this month, click here to subscribe. In addition to this monthly roundup of tips and hacks, every Friday you’ll receive “Five Things Making Me Happy,” along with more articles, podcast episodes, and social posts in “Five Things I Published” once a month.

Gretchen Rubin I like the fun activities as a child. Making time for that childlike curiosity, creativity and freedom from adults' self-imposed limitations could definitely inspire more joy, happiness and work-life balance. Your suggestions are wonderful reminders to not lose that vital sense of playfulness. Thank you.
