Supporting the Heart of Hospitality

Supporting the Heart of Hospitality

People are at the heart of the hospitality industry, and hotels are proud to be places where fulfilling, lifelong careers take shape.

With consumer travel picking up for the summer, the hotel industry has over 100,000 open positions to meet the rise in travel demand. In an effort to fill open hotel jobs, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) launched “Hotels Are Hiring,” a national advertising campaign to help fill open jobs and communicate the benefits of a career in the industry. Through targeted advertising and outreach in key markets including Orlando, San Diego, Phoenix, Nashville, and Washington, D.C., the campaign seeks to build awareness that hotels are hiring and promote hospitality as a career path.

To encourage more workers to join our industry, hotels are offering employees more competitive pay, flexible scheduling, and additional benefits, including paid time off, health care benefits, and retirement savings. According to a survey of AHLA members, approximately half of hotels are now offering signing bonuses or wage incentives to recruit more applicants. With open positions in housekeeping, management, food and beverage and guest services, hotels also provide transferable skills that allow for opportunities in the industry globally.

Hotels are committed to attracting, retaining, and educating individuals for lifelong careers in a growing and vibrant industry. With 80% of entry-level workers eligible for a promotion in less than one year and 50% of hotel general managers starting in an entry-level position, the hotel and lodging industry is full of opportunities for upward mobility. And as an industry of people taking care of people, hotels provide an opportunity to serve others and the local community—an opportunity that other jobs rarely provide.

Our industry is proud to support employees at all stages of their careers through the AHLA Foundation by providing professional development opportunities and awarding $1 million in scholarships annually for industry programs and training to support career advancement. That, in addition to dedicated programs that build our employees once they get a foot in the door, AHLA Foundation seeks to advance diversity throughout the industry by ensuring that at every level, our workforce is as diverse as the guests we serve.

The AHLA has a foundation supporting enhanced training opportunities and scholarships. Let us further help by assisting any hotel in offering a US Apprenticeship program to individuals they hire.

It’s unfortunate that hoteliers had to make gut-wrenching employment decisions when the Pandemic ravaged our industry to the point where hotels were forced to close. But the industry is opening back up - and we welcome those who are ready to begin their career journey in one of the most dynamic industries on the planet, Hotels/Lodging. All you need is a genuine smile and desire to serve others. Promotions will follow. Thanks American Hotel & Lodging Association for taking the lead!
