Sustain Growth and Momentum by Staying Agile and Resilient

Sustain Growth and Momentum by Staying Agile and Resilient

You’ve streamlined your processes, leveraged technology, built a high-performing team, and measured success—now comes the critical part: sustaining growth and momentum.

In Step 7 of the Systemize for Success™ Program, we focus on how to maintain the momentum you’ve built and stay agile as your business continues to evolve. Growth is not a one-time event; it’s a continuous journey that requires adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to refining your strategies as your business grows.

Why Is Sustaining Growth Important?

So much of business growth is about staying ahead of the curve, anticipating shifts, and having the agility to respond when needed. Here’s why sustainability is key:

  • Adapt to change: The business landscape is always evolving. Technology, customer needs, and market trends are constantly shifting. To stay competitive, your business must be able to pivot and adapt.
  • Build resilience: Challenges will come, whether they’re financial, operational, or from external factors. A resilient business isn’t just about surviving those challenges but emerging stronger and more equipped to handle future obstacles.
  • Maintain focus: Without systems and strategies to sustain growth, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and get caught up in the daily grind. Keeping your focus on long-term objectives ensures that your growth doesn’t stall.

How to Sustain Growth and Momentum in Your Business

To keep the momentum going, you must ensure that your business is always evolving, learning, and improving. Here’s how you can keep that growth engine running smoothly:

  1. Stay Agile and Adaptable: Markets, customer preferences, and business trends change quickly. Ensure your business is agile by keeping your systems flexible. A business that’s too rigid or resistant to change won’t be able to adjust to new challenges. Embrace innovation and pivot when necessary.
  2. Revisit Your Goals Regularly: Just because you’ve set goals doesn’t mean they’re static. The landscape may have changed, so revisit your objectives and KPIs every 3-6 months to make sure they still align with your current business environment. Adjust as needed to ensure your goals reflect where you’re heading.
  3. Invest in Continuous Improvement: Building a culture of continuous improvement is essential to sustaining momentum. Encourage feedback from your team, clients, and partners regularly. This feedback loop helps you spot areas for improvement and adjust strategies accordingly. Keep finding ways to streamline, optimize, and innovate.
  4. Monitor and Adjust Your Processes: As your business grows, your processes will need to scale with you. Regularly check for bottlenecks or inefficiencies that may have cropped up. A process that worked when you had 3 clients may not be effective when you have 30. Make adjustments and refine your processes for scalability.
  5. Focus on Client Retention and Relationship Building: While acquiring new customers is important, keeping your existing ones is even more valuable. Build systems and relationships that foster client loyalty and repeat business. A strong base of loyal clients will fuel your growth and sustainability.

What Happens If You Don’t Sustain Growth and Momentum?

The biggest danger of not focusing on sustaining your growth is stagnation. Here’s what can happen if you don’t continually evolve:

  • You risk losing relevance: If you don’t stay agile and responsive to changing needs, your business may fall behind competitors who are innovating and adapting faster.
  • Your team may lose motivation: Without a vision for the future or a sense of momentum, your team may become disengaged or disillusioned with the direction of the business.
  • You’ll struggle to scale: Growth isn’t linear, and scaling your business takes consistent, intentional effort. Without systems in place to sustain growth, you may hit a wall when trying to expand.

The Benefits of Sustaining Growth

When you focus on sustaining growth, you’ll experience:

  • Long-term stability: Sustainable growth leads to a more resilient business that can weather external challenges.
  • Better scalability: A business that maintains momentum and adjusts its systems can scale more smoothly, with fewer disruptions.
  • Increased profitability: As you continue refining processes and improving, your bottom line will grow, and you’ll see increased profit margins.
  • Higher employee satisfaction: A business that’s growing sustainably, with clear goals and progress, keeps employees motivated, focused, and engaged.

This is great advice, Kimberly Laverdure, The Virtual Life Alchemist and Assoc., but I'm curious - what about small businesses that don't necessarily want to grow indefinitely? Is it okay to not always want to add another figure to the revenue, or am I interpreting "growth" wrong?

Good point that growth is something that happens continually and so requires constant adaptability and resilience. I find monitoring goals helps me to identify the areas of growth and understand how best to respond.

One of my friends, Kimberly, talks about "continuous improvement" as "moving the cheese"--if you keep pushing the goal just a little further away, you'll always have something to work toward! This can be maddening if you never reward yourself, but it can also be a useful way of setting ridiculous goals and stretching toward them!

Agreed, Kimberly. It's one thing to grow...it's another to sustain that growth while remaining adaptable, resilient, and focused. Best wishes on your launch in January!
