Sustainability Bulletin - 10.24.2022

Dear Friends,

We have prepared a condensed bulletin for you based on news, articles, and developments that recently took place around the globe about Sustainability.

Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

♻Sustainability Incentive: A sustainability initiative has been launched by international dairy cooperative Arla Foods to encourage farmers to lower their carbon footprint. From 2023, the price farmers receive for their milk will be impacted by their sustainability credentials. Arla’s 8,900 European members will be judged on a points system, gaining credits for things like fertiliser use, biodiversity work, renewable electricity and the green credentials of their feed. ♻Sustainable Farming: Crate to Plate founder Sebastian Sainsbury’s sustainable farming initiative is part of an aspiration to populate the world with ‘15-minute cities’, or metropolises where everyone has access to fresh products within 15 minutes from their home. In shipping container-like spaces around London, he is growing a variety of lettuces, leafy greens and herbs using hydroponics, or a method of growing plants without soil, instead using mineral nutrient solutions in water. The plants are grown vertically to maximize the space of the narrow containers, with each 40ft container producing as much as an acre or more of farmland while using 95 percent less water. The quality of the lettuce and herbs is enhanced through a specially designed temperature, humidity, LED lighting, and water delivery system. Read more: https://bit.ly/3CYV07n

♻Sustainable Transport: Sustainability is no longer just a metric or a goal for the likes of small, science-focused expedition cruises. Cruise operators—large or small, budget or luxury—have gotten onboard with remodeling their ships or building them from the sea up to be more friendly to the environment and the natural ecosystems of their destinations. ♻Digital Production: With the new MO360 Data Platform, Mercedes-Benz is connecting its roughly 30 passenger car plants worldwide to the Microsoft Cloud, enhancing transparency and predictability across its digital production and Sustainability in Car Production supply chain. The MO360 Data Platform is the evolution of Mercedes-Benz’s digital production ecosystem MO360 and allows teams to identify potential supply chain bottlenecks faster and enable a dynamic prioritization of production resources toward electric and Top-End vehicles. This unified data platform is standardized on Microsoft Azure, providing Mercedes-Benz with flexibility and cloud computing power to run artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics at a global scale while addressing cybersecurity and compliance standards across regions. ♻Sustainable Future: Syracuse University continues its efforts to combat climate change and pursue its long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2040. The University recently upgraded exterior lighting fixtures with more efficient and energy-saving LED lights in the Comstock Avenue and Colvin Street parking lots and SU Soccer Stadium, with additional outdoor lighting upgrades underway on South Campus. These upgrades will lower power consumption, thereby reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions, a direct contributor to a warming planet. The new lights will result in a total reduction of 68.09 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. This amount is equal to the estimated greenhouse gas emissions from more than 14 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven in one year or eight homes’ energy use in a single year.
