Sustainability Bulletin - 11.07.2022

Dear Friends,

We have prepared a condensed bulletin for you based on news, articles, and developments that recently took place around the globe about Sustainability.

Here’s what happened last week in our Sustainable World;

♻Sustainable Future: EPIC Propane Pipeline has closed on an amendment and extension of its Term Loan with Riverstone Credit Partners LLC that will mature in September 2026. The Term Loan was converted to a sustainability-linked loan, which highlights EPIC’s continued commitment to a sustainable future. The proceeds were used to refinance existing debt and for general corporate purposes. Read more: https://bit.ly/3NGZeFz

♻Sustainable Mining: Gremial de Recursos Naturales, Minas y Canteras (GRENAT), the national mining association in Guatemala, announced its adoption of Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM), a made-in-Canada corporate social responsibility performance system that improves environmental and social practices in the mining sector. As a result, GRENAT and its affiliated companies will adopt a set of indicators that will allow them to measure and publicly report on the most integral aspects of its mining industry, including those focused on environmental stewardship and effective community engagement. ♻Sustainable Materials: Materials value chains—including metals and mining, building materials, plastics, and packaging—account for around 20 percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Industry leaders are under pressure as climate targets aim for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050—which means materials players have only 30 years to transform a manufacturing and energy landscape that took more than a century to evolve. Doing so requires increasing annual spending on physical assets across sectors by 60 percent (from an estimated annual $5.7 trillion to $9.2 trillion). Read more: https://bit.ly/3t1Gjvx

Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Asia, JSI will lead ARC in partnership with BRAC, DevTech Systems, Inc., and ICF. The innovation process can help you discover sustainable and disruptive ideas in a risk-managed environment and also change business culture by demonstrating "what's possible." ♻Cocoa Sustainability: Mondelēz International will spend an additional $600 million by 2030 on its Cocoa Life program. The initiative, which started in 2012, addresses environmental and human rights challenges and improves the livelihood of farmers who raise cocoa. Dirk Van de Put, Mondelēz’s CEO, said more collaboration needs to be done to have a meaningful impact on the crop. “We are calling for more sector-wide effort and actions to drive greater impact, including new private-public partnerships,” he said. ♻Sustainable Innovation: Lenovo is harnessing new ideas in everything from biofuels to energy-efficient liquid cooling systems for data centers, and paving the way for a future closer to sustainable manufacturing. Reducing carbon emissions takes difficult conversations with suppliers and partners. Lenovo has reached across different sectors to support the use of sustainable aviation fuels with DB Schenker, and to encourage partners to switch to electrified fleets. Lenovo is also working with its supply chain to use sustainable biofuels in our ocean shipping with Maersk. Read more: https://bit.ly/3NMsr1V

♻Sustainable Packaging: From improving food safety and offering sustainable material alternatives to serving as a platform that helps brands and retailers glean more customer data, food packaging innovations are transforming beyond basic containers to vehicles that are revolutionizing the food, beverage and related retail industries. With food safety being a top priority for many consumers, companies are increasing investments in food packaging innovations that not only extend product shelf life and prevent the leaching of potentially dangerous chemicals into food, but also in materials that keep food safer across all points of the supply chain.
