Warehousing is one of the most important components in Supply Chain management. Warehousing buffers the imbalances in the Supply Chain and fulfills various functional activities and roles alongside the mere storing of goods.  

A warehouse is an important operational part of supporting a company's supply chain strategy. They are usually nodes in a Supply Chain network and they greatly influence service levels and cost of the network. Failures in holding and delivering the right product with the right quantity at the right place will result in unhappy customers.

The cost for a warehouse consists of fixed costs for the erection of the building and equipment, and operational costs which strongly depend on the initial design of the warehouse. 

The design of the warehouse is supposed to support the overall business and supply chain strategy. Designing a warehouse must consider the type of industry served. For exmple, A fast fashion online retailer; a 24 hours delivery may be essential feature of this business model.

A sustainable warehouse is a facility with a low environmental impact thanks to different strategies and techniques designed to minimize the production of waste and energy consumption. These warehouses are part of the green logistics framework, which aims to curb the carbon footprint generated by logistics operations and make rational use of supplies.
