SWIMMING WITH THE SHARKS IN THE OCEAN OF S.A-BASED TRAINERS
Occupational training is probably one of the most unregulated industries in the world with no formal and legal protection of the rights of independent training practitioners in particular. The barriers to entry to the market are virtually non-existent and this magnetically attracts the most corrupt and unscrupulous individuals. These prevailing market conditions sow the fertile, yet dysfunctional seeds to becoming a breeding ground for unethical management practices and the resultant exploitation of independent trainers has become common practice. The Learning and Development (L&D) industry is riddled with sharks, charlatans and wannabees. However, if you choose to trade in this industry, then that context becomes your reality.
As a backdrop to this pressing issue, Derek Hendrikz, a trusted business associate and I tried to organize an independent trainer community under a protective professional umbrella, known as the Southern African Professional Trainers Association (SAPTA). We co-opted a number of our other key business associates who were directly involved in advocating this professionally necessary cause. I invested almost 5 years of my professional life in serving SAPTA, only for the organization to regrettably fail. Why did it fail? The #1 reason, because of the selfishness and short-sightedness of trainers, who were only interested in short-term gains and paying training gigs. I came to the conclusion that an endeavour aimed at organizing independent trainers is like "trying to herd cats."
Recently, this unpleasant matter regarding the blatant exploitation of the independent trainer community by ruthless training companies re-surfaced on a WhatsApp group that I co-established. As a seasoned independent trainer, with over 21 years of industry experience, I offered up the following bits of (common sense) advice:

Although this advice might not be fool-proof or ensure that you are 100% bullet-proof from being harpooned as a trainer, I believe that these guidelines will facilitate that your business model will be future-proof in the medium/long term and sustain your professional longevity, as you continue to paddle in the ultra-competitive and turbulent ocean of S.A-based trainers.
