Systems that allow you to enjoy that piña colada

Systems that allow you to enjoy that piña colada

The importance of systems in business

This week I reflected on my own challenges in building systems for my business. It was helpful to go back to why they are essential. This is what I came up with:

  1. Have more time; I can do things in less time, the team can execute tasks and add their flair.
  2. Improve continuously; a process becomes our performance baseline to benchmark alternatives.
  3. Clarify processes + criteria; we can now adjust to best practices and catch any exceptions.
  4. Build the foundations for growth; a prerequisite to growing a team (onboarding and training).
  5. Make the business independent (of me); take time off or work through succession and exit plans.

The importance of systems and how to build them are critical topics for every business leader. The conversation that followed after sharing these thoughts covered a few interesting topics:

  • Systems as the basis of organization.
  • Automation and systems as vital when resources are limited.
  • Reviewing and updating systems as enablers of growth and improvement.

So, having systems that work enables us to step away from work and play more with our kids, enjoy that piña colada by the beach or take an afternoon off. But why are systems vital to you? Or if they're not, why not?

You are so right. Systems make our lives easier but for some reason we are not using them to their full potential, at least I know I am not...🙂
