Take Your Child to Work
Years ago, when I was working at a nursing home, I noticed on a calendar that in a couple of weeks it was going to be "Bring Your Child to Word Day." I went to the administrator and proposed that we participate, so to speak. He smiled, looked me straight in the eyes and asked, "Are you crazy?" I smiled, looked him straight in the eyes and responded, "Yes, but that has nothing to do with it."
He then pointed out that children of staff were definitely not allowed to provide services to residents. I then pointed out that children of staff were definitely permitted to assist staff with clerical work. That it would be a great way for children to learn about what their parents did at work and, as the director of marketing, I could get us some great press coverage (which I did).
Out of a good 100 clerical staff, granted not all of whom had children who could take a day off from school, we had around 20 children join us for the day. As far as I was concerned, that was pretty good for a first-time endeavor.
We had a general orientation and then assigned the children to the departments in which they seemed to have an interest.
The final evaluation was contradictory. Not all the children thought the experience was worthwhile, but those whose photo did not get into the local press or our employee newsletter, were all jealous. On the other hand, all of the parents were thrilled and those who had chosen not to participate wanted to know if we were going to repeat the "event" the following year.
Even those children who did not enjoy themselves, not to mention those who did, came away with a new appreciation for their parent's work.
This year, Bring Your Child To Work Day, is April 27. Based on my experience, you still have time to make it a rewarding experience for all concerned. So do it! You'll be glad you did.
