Take Your Dad To Work Day
The finale of Holmes Next Generation just aired last week on the DIY Network. If you watched it, let me know what you thought. I had a great time on set because this time I had Sherry and Mike Jr with me on site, making decisions, laughing, playing pranks. And there was some construction.
We did some great work as a team but the best part was watching my kids help homeowners, coming up with ideas and learning along the way.
My inspiration
People often ask me about my pierced ears. Not a sign of rebellion. The left one has a very special meaning. My father has always been the inspiration behind everything I do, and I got my left ear pierced in his memory. He tragically passed away at the age of 55. I learned everything from him.
My father was a huge influencing factor in my life. I learning the trades from him, he taught me small jobs and trusted me to finish them. In fact, I still say the highlight of my career is earning my father's respect.
How I got started on TV
I tell people that I was working in the construction industry for 20+ years when I was asked to develop my own TV show. Holmes on Homes® ended up becoming the #1 show on HGTV Canada and an international success. But the truth is that I was helping my father (who has a jack-of-all trades by the way) with maintenance and repair jobs at an age so young that I won't even mention it. Let's just say it wasn't even a double digit.
Building is in my blood, and I got it from my father. I never really thought about television, but TV has allowed me to educate homeowners about what to look for in contractors, how to build it right and what proper building codes are.
Building is in my blood.
The Next Generation
When Holmes Next Generation started airing, people wrote in and stopped me in the streets to ask if I was retiring. I am not ready to stop anytime soon, but I am grateful that my kids followed in my footsteps. When Holmes Next Generation started airing, people wrote in and stopped me in the streets to ask if I was retiring. I am not ready to stop anytime soon, but I am grateful that my kids followed in my footsteps. They joke about taking over, about being my boss now. I love having them around at work. Or as Mike Jr jokingly likes to call it-Take Your Dad To Work Day Everyday.

6yThis is so great! My 11 year old doesn’t seem to be interested AT ALL! The 18 month old gets right in there when the tools come out! Fingers crossed!
