It takes courage to let go of the familiar and embrace the new!
Today marks one year of denture Capital! E01 of the denture Capital show went live on this day last year. While it has been a bumpy ride both on a professional and personal front, I am more excited today than I was a year back!
The idea was to do something that people loved watching, work with interesting people and have fun along the way. And that's exactly what happened. We were noticed, we have built decent traction and we had the opportunity to meet and work with very interesting people. However,
We had absolutely no clarity of the kind of business we wanted to build. We felt that if we did something interesting, we will figure out a business model. While there was the aspect of doing branded or sponsored content which was something we wanted to do, we did not find takers for it. While we had the hunger and passion & we had differentiation, but the opportunity was not large market. Our viewership is not going to run to millions of views. We will appeal to a niche and the number of brands that will want to work with us are not many
So we had to pivot. For us, this was a big change, to move to a services model. But for the market we operated in, it did not sound very different. Everyone tells me this is only logical and not a big change. But, we are taking it one day at a time as the mindset required to do services is very different from the mindset we had when we started. We have so many brands wanting to work with us now, we have bagged many projects and the demand is far more than what we can deliver. It does not really mean we will only do services, we will do both!
So, that's what we are upto and let's see how it goes!
On the other hand, I had written in January that we have a solid team that is crushing it. But, at a startup, it takes very little time for things to change. And that's why we read news that a startup is killing it on one day and a month later, read that it has shut shop.
- Hasa & I started denture Capital and in February 2017, when it was evident that we'd have to pivot to a services model, Hasa quit. He did not want to work on a services model and I respect that decision. But, the brand denture Capital stands today due to Hasa's efforts of appealing to the niche and only doing things that interest them.
- 80% of the startups we featured in S01 of denture Capital shut shop
- While we had offers to get acqui-hired, acquired just because of our skills and capabilities,we wanted to keep doing this for some more time
- Investors also came knocking. But again, what they wanted was us to pivot to a large market opportunity of doing content around travel and recipes and more generic categories. We were even offered up to a million dollars if we could do that. But, we didn't want to do that. So,
"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it & join the dance"
I am left with a brand, some debt and a team. But thankfully, again the thing that really keeps me going is the team. The people who I work with have upskilled themselves, have taken accountability for the rebuilding exercise and we are getting stronger with each day. We have so many projects to deliver in the next few days and as I wrote at the start, I am more excited than ever to keep it going!
