Taking A Journey Without GPS Or A Roadmap? What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Last Sunday on my mid-morning walk I had an interesting encounter.

Those of you who know me know that I walk 10kms every morning, or most mornings, and that I live in a small country town in NSW where the roads are narrow and traffic and cars are infrequent.

So picture this…

At the bottom of a long hill the road that I walk along joins a two lane highway, where cars travel along that highway at 100km/hr in both directions.

As you can imagine, I walk TO this highway and then I turn and walk back up the hill.

I never along the highway or across it.

That would be stupid.

Anyway, on this morning, as I was approaching this intersection, a car turned off the highway and pulled up on the side of the road. As I walked closer towards this parked car, it pulled out from its parked position, and drove along the road toward me, and then stopped, with the passenger side window wound down.

I approached the car and was greeted by a woman driver seeking directions.

The driver was on her way to Nowra [about an hour away] and had stopped in at Robertson [about six minutes’ drive from where I was walking] and had left Robertson and felt that she had missed the turn to go to Nowra.

I figured that the lady was 15-20 minutes’ drive from rejoining the correct route that she needed to be on, but getting her back onto that route was going to be complicated…

In my mind, there was a way for her to drive five miles west, and then five miles south, and then three miles east… to get back on track…. or I could tell her another way to drive two miles east and then five miles south to rejoin the route she needed to be on in exactly the same place.

The first option was way longer than the second option, but it was better signposted than the second option.

However, the second option was straightforward, and the directions were easy to follow.

There was a third option, which was shorter, but involved many turns through two villages… I made an executive decision not to give the lady option three.

I chose to send her away with the simple directions of option two… with a little trust and belief she would find her way to Nowra and enjoy her afternoon there with her friends...

The interesting thing was…

The interesting thing about this encounter was that the lost lady driver appeared to not have any map or GPS navigation in place.

This was odd.

Who in 2024 sets out on a country drive without Google Maps being programmed correctly on their cell phone to aid and assist them in charting a safer journey?

She was very trusting of me… for all she knew I could have sent her on a wild goose chase off into the never never… never to return, let alone find her way to Nowra [or Kansas].

Some people run their businesses this exact same way…

There are people out there who turn up for work every day in their business and HOPE that at the end of the day they are on the right road to their lifetime destination, despite the fact that they have no GPS guide, and no roadmap, and no idea of what they are doing, other than HOPING that things will work out OK for them.

Which is not really that clever, when we know that there is always someone who has been along the journey that they are about to embark on, and that this person can guide them to avoid the hazards and the wrong turns, so that they get to their destination quickly and efficiently, without the detours and the emergency detours, and without the frustrations of taking the wrong turns.

And yet so many people in business think that there’s merit in working things out for themselves, when sure, maybe they can do that, but it costs them money to do that, and it costs them LOST TIME in wasting time figuring things out, when they could have simply sought the correct advice, and kept on moving.

For me, I’m always driving with GPS on. It always helps me to get to where I’m wanting to go as quickly and efficiently as I can.

In life, and in business, seeking advice from Trusted Advisors, and sticking to that advice, and acting on that advice alone, have been the key things that have helped me along the road to success with minimal detours.
