Industry Insights - Google Pixel vs Apple iPhone launch

Pixel Event. Last week, Google wrapped its big fall event, where it showed off the new Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch, and offered details about the upcoming Pixel Tablet. The event garnered 428K online mentions, with an overwhelmingly positive net sentiment at 87%.

In comparison, the new iPhone launch generated about 7 times as many mentions last September. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai tweeted the launch of the tech giant’s new offerings building the excitement with more than 9K engagements, as shown in the Virality Map below.

What’s new? This year’s event generated 22% more buzz than last year’s as shown in the results over time chart below. The company acquired Fitbit last year and has now released the new Pixel Watch which themed heavily in the conversations, driven by appreciation for the health and fitness features of the smartwatch.

On the other hand, the new generation of the Google smartphone comes with some notable improvements which drove positive sentiment, including a new processor, extended battery life in Extreme Battery Saver mode, and improved camera features especially in the Pro variant.

Results over time from September 2021 to October 2022 show a 22% increase in conversations over the previous year. Sentiment key drivers are positive and include pixel watch, battery life, pre order, google's pixel, photo unblur, refresh rate, selfie camera.

This year’s event drove 22% more conversations than the last one, with improvements to the Pixel smartphones driving positive sentiment, as the Pixel Watch themed heavily in the conversations.

Consumer Insights - Soccer kit or a Halloween costume?

Mentions creeping up. The Halloween excitement has officially begun, with over 7.8 million online mentions in the last 30 days, and a net sentiment of 60%. According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween 2022 has the potential for more than $10 billion in total planned consumer spending - and the retail push has officially started! When looking at the top brands linked to the event, we find Spirit Halloween - a dedicated retail store for the holiday - on top of the list, with consumers eager to visit the store.

Other brands have also launched Halloween themed offerings, from streaming services like Netflix and Spotify to video game companies like Fortnite, Nintendo, and Xbox. 

Sentiment key drivers include Halloween emoji - pumpkin, bat, ghost, fire. With positive sentiment including words - halloween, movies, friend, candy, spooky, costumes, kids, game. Top brand mentions include Netflix, Fortnite, HBO, Oculus Rift, Nintendo, Walmart, Lego Group, Beetlejuice, Xbox, SSC Napoli.

Spooky emojis and conversations about costumes drove the positive sentiment, while SSC Napoli emerged as a surprise among the top brands. 

Look out, bats! Italian soccer club SSC Napoli released a special edition Halloween kit, which will be worn by the team during games at the end of October. The blue jersey covered in a swarm of bats is designed by Emporio Armani's in-house sports division, and was mentioned online more than 2.2K times with a net sentiment of 58%. Napoli’s tweet garnered more than 1.4K engagements and got the soccer community excited, as visual analytics showed images of the ghoulish kit plastered all over the internet.
