Here’s your chance! Because I’m going to invite you into my head for the next few minutes. We’ll outline a simple 3-step process for creating the perfect headspace.

While you're in there, you’ll learn how to generate incredible, epic aha moments that will produce an unlimited stream of tantalizing big ideas.

Ready for the adventure?!

Let’s set the stage!

The Blinking Cursor on the Blank Screen

It’s time to start brainstorming for the next Big Idea. You want to propel your product into the marketplace with a compelling message for your ideal customer.

A message that fires their imagination of what could be.

This message will bring them out of despair and into hope!

They’ll see that your product or service can solve the nagging problem that plagues their days and haunts their nights.

You sit down at the computer, open the word processor, and. . .

. . .you freeze.

Blank computer screen on a desk with hands starting to type

The cursor blinks encouragingly on the blank white screen. But in your mind, all you hear is, “Well? Come on. . .start typing. What’s the matter? Here I am. . .waiting for words.”

You half-heartedly type out a few words, thinking, “It’s just an idea. If I get that done, the rest will come.”

You freeze again.

The cursor sighs dramatically and tries again.

“Seriously? Look! Here’s a nice, fresh page just itching to know what’s in your head!”

And that’s when it hits you.

There’s too much in my head. I can’t even make sense of it. I know people will love my product, so why can’t I put that into words?

The Perfect Headspace — Critical for Idea Generation

Believe me, I’ve been there. I know the Big Idea is in my head somewhere. I just can’t put my finger on it. I can’t tease it out of the muddle of jumbled thoughts and distractions vying for my attention.

Hourglass

It’s like an hourglass filled with thousands of grains of sand. One of those grains carries the perfect idea, but you can’t separate it from the rest. As the sands pour through the funnel, they all congregate again in the bottom of the hourglass. Then you tip it over and start the whole process again.

But you never really get anywhere. You never find the one perfect grain of sand because all the grains look alike. It’s hiding in a sea of similarity and can’t separate itself from the rest to grab your attention.

Thankfully, there are ways to calm the firestorm of thoughts. If you can do that, you’ll create a muse-friendly headspace with unlimited potential for generating tantalizing, sizzling big ideas!

It’s time to share!

My Top 3 Tips for Creating the Perfect Idea-Generation Headspace that Inspires Awesome, Epic Aha Moments

Little girl thinking - big idea

What is an “aha moment,” and why is it crucial for generating big ideas?

It’s the light bulb that bursts into brilliance in your mind.

It’s the lightning bolt that hits you out of the blue.

And sometimes. . .sometimes. . .it’s the still, quiet voice inside you that gently touches your conscious mind. . .and never stops.

The aha moment is the creative’s sudden awareness that finally, finally, it all makes sense. The research, the meetings with colleagues, the social media sleuthing. . .everything coalesces into one final idea that will resonate with your target audience. The “Big Idea.”

But how do you encourage and inspire those aha moments? Step into my world, and I’ll share my top three tips for creating the perfect headspace for idea generation.

Tip #1: Take Care of Your Brain

I know. I know. It seems obvious. If you want to develop good ideas, you should make sure your brain is up to the challenge.

So how do you take care of your brain to keep it in prime condition for idea generation?

There are lots of things you can do to enhance your brain’s ability to remain open to creativity and sift through the massive amounts of information you’re feeding it.

Just like your car’s engine, your brain is a well-oiled machine that, when cared for, will serve you for years to come. . .hopefully your entire life.

So I’m going to share with you my best suggestions for keeping your brain in tip-top condition.

My Top 4 Brain-Boosting Tips for Optimum Big Idea Generation

  • Get plenty of sleep — don’t burn the candle at both ends. A tired brain is more easily distracted. It’s also less able to function logically, making it challenging to organize your thoughts.
  • Manage your stress — stress impairs your brain’s ability to function. . .plain and simple. It affects thinking, memory, and mood. Researchers believe that when one area of the brain is engaged (for instance, the amygdala — the part that deals with stress), it takes away resources from other regions. One good way to manage stress is physical activity. So, before you sit down to write, take a walk, do some yoga, or play fetch with your dog. You’ll feel better — you’ll write better!

Glasses of fresh water with berries

  • Drink enough water — stay hydrated. Proper hydration improves concentration and cognition, maintains memory functions, and balances mood and emotions. It also increases blood flow and oxygen to your brain, reduces stress, and prevents and relieves headaches.
  • Eat healthy foods — nutrition! Yes, even the foods you eat can affect your brain. Research studies show a relationship between a whole food diet and brain health. So, eliminate processed foods. Pick up an apple and take a bite!

Tip #2: Research, Research, Research

I've mentioned this in other articles, but it bears repeating. Nothing beats research for establishing the foundation for developing your Big Idea.

How much is too much? Well, that’s a subjective decision. Do you think you’ve figured it all out, or are you still seeking answers? Only you know when you’ve done enough research to move forward.

Bookshelf full of books

But I can tell you, I find myself doing more research throughout the writing phase. I’m always looking for more information, deeper meanings, and gold nuggets.

All that knowledge you’re feeding your brain creates fertile ground for idea generation. I mean, think about it. If you want tasty, juicy fruits, you have to nourish the plant, right?

So go ahead and dive into some rabbit holes! Get those creative juices flowing!

Tip #3: Step Away!

Yes, you heard that right. Take a break. You’ve been feeding your mind so much information, it’s time to let that percolate a bit. Your brain needs time to process and assimilate what it’s absorbed.

If you can afford the time, take a break for at least a day. Go to the beach, take a hike, do whatever you enjoy doing, and try to clear your head. You’re not out to think of your Big Idea. You’re not out to mull over all you’ve learned. You’re out to enrich your life experiences. You’re on holiday.

Can’t afford that much time? That’s okay. Take a walk, meditate, or get in the shower. You’d be surprised. Some of my best ideas hit me in the shower!

If the aha moment comes while you’re playing or relaxing, jot it down, or tell your cell phone to make a note. Then continue relaxing. You never know. You might have more than one aha moment. That’s okay. Jot them all down and keep enjoying your break.

There will be plenty of time to flesh out your Big Idea when you’re done.

Let's Recap!

Hey Heather Murata, some great tips you can take action on immediately. One thing I almost always do is get plenty of sleep. The few times I don't get my usual sleep in don't end well for me! I just have to get caught up with a nap ASAP later in the day.
