📢Progressive HR Community Editorial - This week Tim Gourley , Manager of Talent Acquisition with Vestmark
Is adding Wednesday a good idea for your RTO strategy?
We are at an interesting crossroads in the labor market. The news cycles and economic indicators have been very doom and gloom with the threats of pending layoffs coming. As such, employers are feeling a bit more empowered to mandate of RTO strategies.
Talent Acquisition is caught right in the middle trying to gauge market conditions, attract talent amid the “Great Resignation” and explain to employers that most potential candidates in this tight labor market still DO NOT want a mandate to come back into the office.
I have found that most candidates want compromise with continued flexibility. Some candidates want the flexibility to come in early and leave early to avoid rush hour traffic. Other candidates need to come in later to accommodate daycare, school drop off and pick up, and eldercare.
We have been successful here at Vestmark asking employees to come into the office on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s for collaboration days. We have recently expanded this to include a third day on Wednesday, given the success and feedback that we have received.
I think adding Wednesday will work for most teams if we continue to offer 'Structured Flexibility'.
This structured flexibility - a term used by Nick Thurlow , Chief People Officer with Vestmark - would be based on the business needs of each team. Structed flexibility allows employees the ability to balance their time in the office with commute and personal needs, and creates the expectation that if they did come into the office, they would be able to collaborate on projects, meet face-to-face and to stay connected with their colleagues.
Remote work is not going away. A study published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics back in March 2022 reported that 52.2% of jobs in the information industry were working remotely full time. As people leaders, we can continue to enable employees to work virtually and look to improve technology to collaborate more effectively with this new hybrid workforce of the future.
******Author's note: We have celebrated being back in the office together with several events put on by our Fun Committee which included: ice cream sandwiches with the Cooke Monstah Truck, breakfast served by the leadership team, and several charity events.
