#TeamMITRE Spotlight: Denise Scannell
During Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing MITRE employees from our Women’s Business Resource Group (BRG) and the impactful work they do here and in the community. Meet Denise.
At MITRE, Denise leads a team of quantitative and qualitative researchers addressing issues like health literacy and engagement, health economics, health equity, and social engagement and impact. She also leads projects and capabilities focused on the evolving and disruptive impacts of technology and innovation on societal behavior and decision-making—including the anthropology of technology, AI literacy, and harmful effects of the information ecosystem online.
“Being a member of the Women’s BRG has provided me with a supportive network of incredible individuals. I am grateful to learn from their experiences, gain valuable advice, and develop my skills in a supportive environment. It has also given me a platform to advocate for gender equality in the workplace. The experience has been personally fulfilling and positively impactful to my professional life by fostering a more inclusive and equitable work environment.”
Q: Tell us about a challenge you’ve overcome as a woman in the workplace.
DS: Overcoming unconscious bias. Early in my career, I noticed that my ideas were often overlooked in meetings, while similar suggestions from male colleagues were readily accepted. This was frustrating and demotivating. To overcome this, I started to assert myself more during discussions. I made sure to present my ideas clearly and confidently, backing them up with data whenever possible. I also sought the support of allies in the workplace, both male and female, who could vouch for my contributions and abilities. Over time, I noticed a shift in how my ideas were received. This experience taught me the importance of self-advocacy and resilience. It also motivated me to mentor other women in my organization, helping them navigate similar challenges.
Q: Tell us about your volunteer efforts or service you’re doing in the community.
DS: I currently spend my volunteer time with local community non-profit hospice support organizations in honor of my recently passed mother. My focus is on making organizations visible to community members who need these services and helping to make the connections.
