After commencement of the Olympic games from 26th July, in Paris, the world is witnessing a new era of competition where human skill meets cutting-edge innovation. From optimising sports venue design to athlete performance enhancement to immersive fan experiences, technology is redefining the Olympic Game this time. In this article we will discuss a few areas where  the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has integrated Technology to revolutionise the Olympic experience.

1. AI-powered monitoring system

Athletes are the cornerstone of the Olympic Games. Recognizing their paramount importance, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance athlete welfare. From accelerating injury recovery to optimising physical and mental health, the IOC believes AI can revolutionise athlete care. In collaboration with technological pioneers like Intel, Atos, and Deloitte, the IOC has developed an AI-powered monitoring system designed to safeguard athletes and elevate their overall well-being. This strategic partnership underscores the commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for athletes on the world's biggest sporting stage.

1..1 Protecting Athletes from Online Abuse

AI-driven system earlier this year to shield athletes from cyberbullying. This technology will scan countless social media accounts for harmful & abusing content, automatically flagging abusive posts for removal by the respective platforms.

1.2. Boosting Health, Wellbeing

AI can be instrumental in injury prevention, creating personalised recovery programs for athletes, and aiding in their mental well-being.

1.3. Chat Service for the Athletes

Athletes competing in the Paris Olympics will have access to a new chat service on the Athlete365 platform, a joint venture between the IOC and Intel. This service aims to provide athletes with quick and easy answers to common questions about social media guidelines, doping rules, and Olympic regulations.

2. Improving Judging & Referring

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionise sports officiating. By introducing objectivity into subjective decisions, AI can significantly reduce human error in judging and refereeing. Furthermore, real-time data analysis powered by AI can provide instant insights into game-changing moments, enhancing the accuracy and fairness of competitions.

3. Sustainable Venue Design

AI is not only transforming the core of the Olympic Games but also its operational backbone. IOC is leveraging the Digital twin technology, in collaboration with Intel, This innovative approach enables strategic camera placement, and accessibility evaluations without physical on-site presence. This technology is streamlining the entire planning process, from resource allocation to potential issue identification, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Olympic Games.

4. A Data-Driven Approach to Efficient Power Consumption

The 2024 Paris Olympics are taking a data-centric approach to sustainability. Real-time monitoring of energy consumption will be implemented, providing valuable insights to inform future Games. This aligns with Paris' ambitious goal of a 50% reduction in carbon footprint compared to previous Olympics, emphasising their commitment to a greener future for the sporting spectacle. According to the report, the carbon footprint of the Paris 2024 Games was estimated at 1.58 million teqCO2, even lower than the target of 1.75 million teqCO2.

As Ilario Corna, IOC’s Chief Technology Officer rightly said “We will see some pioneering concepts at Paris 2024. We are taking a measured approach for now, to test and evaluate how AI can be used to enhance the Olympic Games and have them future-ready”.
