Tech News, Site Search Video Masterclass, Useful Resources & More

Thanks as always for taking time to read. This week's is shorter than usual, it has been a manic few weeks for both of us. We hope you like the video, with practical tips on how to improve your on-site search experience.

Part One: Tech News

Octane AI

Launched integrations with leading subscriptions vendors including Recharge, Ordergroove, Skio, Loop, Stay AI, and Smartr.

Why is this useful?

You can now sync subscriptions products to Octane automatically and then promote subscriptions products on the quiz results page. Great addition, I have a few subscription clients for whom this will be really useful, as they can create custom subscription quizzes.

Advanced Commerce

The platform is progressing really well under CEO Andre Brown's leadership. Great to see they've now added A/B testing, so ecommerce teams can run different merchandising strategies to determine which performs best. You can set up an A/B test on any page element to test on a PLP, SRP (search results page) or in recommendations blocks. We've recommended this to some of our clients - live example is The Rug Company.

Part Two: Video Masterclass (6m30s)

5 examples of brands providing a smarter search quick view UX and functionality

Learn how to elevate your site search quick view UX to boost product discovery, improve customer experience and deliver subtle persuasion and personalisation.

Find out how:

  1. Astrid & Miyu display your recent searches, not just popular searches & categories
  2. Topps Tiles use persuasion tactics to emphasise popular and trending products
  3. Gymshark display your recently viewed items to remind you of what you've been checking out
  4. PANGAIA tease promotional offers after certain search box engagement criteria have been met
  5. Ecommerce brands are missing out on personalisation opportunities

Part Three: An Obscurely Interesting Price Test 😅

We came across this price test recently when reading up on psychology in pricing strategy (source: Nick Kolenda newsletter). That's how we roll.

Principle: align pricing structure with product types.

Example: match the digits for product pairs, like a pair of socks.

Caveat: we've no idea if this works, we've never tested it, simply enjoyed reading the psychological research behind it. But we do enjoy obscure ideas!

Can we tempt any of you to give this a whirl?

Part Four: Useful Resources

📙 Gartner's latest Critical Digital Capabilities report is useful reading. It gives a high-level comparison of leading vendors and a summary of where their analysts see each platform's strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn't personally take this as definitive but it's useful to compare viewpoints in an industry with so much competing information 😆

📲 Liam Quinn latest post on AI, highlighting the potential benefits of OpenAI new release for their video generation product Sora, which is now publicly available in the US. Key features:

  • Better physics (materials and objects moving more naturally)
  • Longer clips (up to 15 seconds without breaking)
  • More realistic lighting

🎁 A break from all the online #BFCM data, with a look at the retail store footfall trends, from Modern Retail. Key stats:

  • UK in-store traffic on Black Friday = up +4.8%
  • Visits to stores up +17% in the week of Black Friday
  • Retail parks were the top performing shopping destination; footfall jumped +8.3%

👍 Not new but a refresher on Baymard Institute PDP UX research insights has been thoroughly useful to check I'm not forgetting anything when doing site audits (thanks to Rotate°'s Chris Harris of reminding me of it via his newsletter).

If you don't yet read Baymard's free UX articles, I recommend you bookmark the site - it's a wonderful resource.
