Edinburgh stands as the UK’s most AI ready city outside of London

Not only is Edinburgh the home to Cathcart Technology’s headquarters, but it has also just been named the UK’s most AI ready city outside of London, coming top in SAS’s AI Cities Index 2023. According to new research, Edinburgh’s success in innovative AI is a result of the city’s word-class universities. Together with the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s, announcement of the £100 million investment into safe AI earlier this year, this is fantastic news for Edinburgh’s artificial intelligence scene.

Innovative aviation technology is taking off

If you asked aircraft pilots half a century ago what they imagined modern day flying to be like, it would be difficult to predict the extent of technology’s role in air travel. Project Dragonfly is the latest development in autopilot technology. Launched in the Airbus campus in Toulouse, Project Dragonfly tested autonomous emergency descents, taxiing, and improved automatic landing, with the ultimate aim of making air travel safer.

The battle of supply and demand in the Scottish technology labour market

That’s right, the skills shortage continues to affect the technology labour market whilst demand for tech talent surges. According to the latest issue of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Report on Jobs, supply of permanent staff has worsened for the twenty-eighth month in a row, and availability of temporary workers has fallen for the twenty-seventh consecutive month. The paradox of the market is whilst labour supply across Scotland has fallen, the demand for IT & Computing talent has had the greatest increase across Scotland and the UK.

Tech giant Amazon aids talent shortage for SME’s

In 2021, Amazon introduced the Apprenticeship Fund aiming to generate more than 750 apprentice jobs across England in computing science, DevOps, IT solutions, cloud computing and other digital careers by 2024. The fund is now worth £8 million, and since the introduction of the scheme, labour supply for technically skilled workers has declined, making it even more difficult for companies with limited resources to hire. Whilst this will support the growth of several SME’s, the skills shortage shows no sign of alleviating any time soon, meaning many companies are still struggling to find technical talent – did somebody say tech recruiter?

A Cathcart charity fundraiser

This month, a group of Cathcart’s keenest golfers took on The Big Golf Race for Prostate Cancer UK. And of course, we all clubbed together to support them in raising over £1,300. A sharp start, the team teed off at 4am to play 4 rounds of golf totalling 72 holes and covering 26 miles in one day. A total success if you ask us! We offer our employees 3 volunteering days a year to use for charity fundraising efforts or to support a non-profit of their choice, it’s great to see these days being utilised for such an influential cause.
