TEDx Attitude: PASSIONATE, POISED, CONFIDENT, AND POWERFULLY SUCCINCT
Those are words people use to describe successful TED or TED-like speakers. It sounds easy. Yet, mastering the TED-Format takes hard work and practice, and even if you never speak at a TED event, it's worth the effort.
During the last decade, as a TED-format coach, I’ve come to realize that succeeding in the free-form, TED-talk format demands a special blend of characteristics.
To create a TED-like talk that truly works requires you to be:
SUCCINCT - AND ULTRA-CLEAR. A TED-like talk is 18 minutes or less, so focus and clarity are mandatory! Your talk needs to be well-crafted and rhetorically sharp. You’ll need a technical understanding of narrative flow, language, rhetoric, communication, and emotional connection to land your "one idea worth spreading."
CONFIDENT - You can’t just share how awesome you are because succeeding takes Insightful Vulnerability™. To truly deliver, you must have faced, and faced down, your demons and be able to acknowledge the role they have played in honing your life and your ideas.
PASSIONATE - Your message, your leadership, and your contribution is inextricably tied to your journey and your mission; who you are. That requires you to genuinely know and tell your origin story - which must be well chosen, well crafted and well delivered.
AUTHENTIC - Your talk must be fully aligned with your values, your principles, and be delivered in your own style. This is a real opportunity to dig deep into who you are and what you stand for. Even if you believe you already know, you may be surprised.
Developing the TED technique is an amazing, worthwhile journey. It changed my life, and bringing it to your leadership communications will illuminate your vision.
There's more about the TED format and its importance for leaders in this 90-second VIDEO. If you'd like to know more about 1:1 coaching or team training, reply to this message, and we'll set a time to talk!
