TEI's 2018 Audits and Appeals Seminar

Some things get better with age. Thirty-five years ago, I was fortunate to be “present at the creation” of TEI’s IRS Audits and Appeals Seminar, a program that has become a linchpin of Tax Executives Institute’s curriculum. Over the years, thousands and thousands of seasoned and new tax professionals have benefitted from TEI’s first-in-class tax controversy program.

The 2018 version of the program -- which will be held in New Orleans from April 30 to May 3 -- builds upon the Institute’s decades of experience and success with the audits and appeals seminar.  The program will not only focus on the various flavors of tax controversy (i.e., federal, transfer pricing, and state & local tax), but will employ a variety of learning formats to provide attendees with different “looks” to help develop their controversy skills and capabilities.  For example, TEI is piloting an intensive federal case study track, designed to enable attendees, working in small teams and with dedicated advisers, to concentrate on selected aspects of a federal controversy life cycle. In addition, the issue discussion forums will enable registrants to engage directly with subject matter experts, not on hypotheticals, but on live issues and problems.

The agenda also includes a broad range of skills, strategy, technical and workshop-based breakout sessions. Finally, the program will feature a “fireside chat” with representatives from the Internal Revenue Service and the OECD, as well as state court jurists and state attorneys general.

Three of my KPMG colleagues — Erin Collins, Tom Greenaway, and Michelle Marion — will be part the faculty this year, and I know from experience that the audience will benefit from their insights and practical suggestions.
