Telling a Story with your Food

Telling a Story with your Food

Photos are a powerful medium for storytelling, with each image having the potential to evoke emotions, triggers memories and capture a culinary experience. Achieving all this in a single shot can be difficult, but here are some things to consider when setting up your food shots or when enlisting the help of a food photographer to do this for you.

Decide on your story

Before making any other choices, think about what story you want your images to tell. Is it about how a dish is made and the ingredients used, is it to celebrate a gathering or festival or to set the scene of where this dish is enjoyed.

Being clear about this will help to make further choices on the backgrounds, crockery, props and colours you incorporate.

Lighting

The choice of natural or artificial light and hard or soft light can evoke different emotions and feelings within a photo.Choosing the correct lighting to fit the feeling you are trying to achieve will result in more coherent images. Use of hard light often gives a more dramatic and edgy feel, whilst softer natural light can be more calming and comforting.

Tastes & Smells

Have you ever looked at a food photo and found yourself sniffing the air and licking your lips?

Use of ingredients or spices within the photo or as garnishes can help one imagine the flavours and smells of the food. Whether you add some extra cheese to a pasta dish or some chocolate sauce to your chocolate brownie sundae, these additions can make your photos drool worthy.

Highlighting the textures within food can also add depth to a photo as well as entice viewer's through their senses.

Environments

Where the main focus is on the food alone, close up shots will help avoid any other distractions. If you are selling the food as part of a whole dining experience, including part of the cafe, bar or restaurant in which it is being served within the shot will help to convey this.

Home-made dishes might be photographed around a dining table and exquisite high end drinks or dishes on bar top or in a luxury restaurant. Consider including some of the venue in your photo to give hints of the environment and vibe visitors can expect when they visit.

Emotions & Memories

Use of appropriate props, fabrics and ornaments within the scene of a photo can help stimulate certain emotions and evoke memories. Helping viewers to recall similar memories in their own lives can build a bond and love for a dish or venue; enticing your customers back again and again.

They say a picture tells a thousand words, but when someone looks at your food photos, what words do you want them to be thinking?
