Telling the Truth

Have you ever lied to get a job?

I ask because I saw these stats from a ResumeTemplates.com survey that asked 1,759 applicants who have looked for a job in the past two years.

  • 71% of job seekers cheated or lied during the hiring process
  • 22% cheated on an assessment
  • 22% lied on their resume
  • nearly half gave a false reference

Then, regarding the 22% who cheated:

  • 71% say they had searched for answers on Google when they had been instructed not to do so
  • 37% asked ChatGPT to do the heavy lifting
  • 33% sought out assistance from others

I can understand assistance from others. That makes sense. However, the rest of these statistics I think are based purely in fear, stress, and anxiety. 71% asked Google and 37% asked ChatGPT, when we know that AI and the internet provide both correct and incorrect information.

Oh, and recruiters and the hiring team can tell.

One of the reasons that I’m shocked and surprised about this survey is that my clients don’t lie. How do I know? Because I dig down with them into the details of their statements and find out the real information, and there is no way they could lie through those details. Could they get a number or statistic wrong? Absolutely. But even if they do, the idea of the impact is still there.

Also, I give my clients permission to fail with me. I encourage my clients to make their mistakes with me, flub answers with me. Because then I can give them feedback that makes the job search easier and faster. This way when my clients send in their resume or are in the interview they don’t feel the need to lie because they have proof of why they deserve the job and they feel more in control and empowered. My clients don’t have to make stuff up.

If anything, my clients—especially my female clients – underestimate everything on their resume. I actually spend much of my time building up the statistics and results on their resume. I’ve never had to knock down or delete statements due to lies. Ever.

There is a well-known expression, Tell the truth and then you don’t have to remember what you said. If you have been lying, let’s get you to a place where the truth helps and gets you the job!

You are right . In my personal experience most job hunters don’t lie because they are too afraid of “ being caught out” by colleagues . Most would rather undersell their skills rather than be embarrased in a challenging environment.
