'Thank God It's Thursday', because they are now our new Fridays!
Yes! Every 3rd Friday of the month is a holiday at SignEasy, giving us a long weekend each month. This is no talent attraction gimmick or a way to woo prospects, or is it? :p
A while back SignEasy's leadership team decided to implement a few industry-leading and creative people programs, and I did jump at it when I was asked about trying a 4-day workweek. Why not?, I replied. Not because I knew the potential it had on employee morale and productivity, but also because I've always advocated a pro-employee approach, and the leadership here is just about that! That's not all. The policy extends by giving us all meeting-free Wednesdays every week, ensuring we pay attention to tasks, emails, and unattended work during the week to enhance everyone's ability to be more organized with complete attention and focus. Trust me, we are even encouraged to decline a meeting request on Wednesdays, unless it's a pressing matter or a work emergency.
The three questions I initially had, [which I don't anymore]:
- How do we operationalize this?
- How do we live this new standard; Will this someday make it commonplace across the industry? Am I taking the right responsibility because I knew this will involve initial organizing challenges.
- Listening to ideas is one, but when it comes to executing, I had my doubts. Months back, MS Japan piloted a 4-day week, but they are MS! They have thousands working for them. They had the bandwidth to create guidelines, proofread, and implement them. But here, we are a lean team balancing strategy and execution, at the speed of light!
After implementing though, the answers were pretty clear:
The 3rd Friday offs and meeting-free Wednesdays are not about productivity and employee positivity, but it’s primarily about the health and well-being of employees. Thanks to the pandemic, it specifically brought about staffs' wellness needs to the core front with special consideration by organizations across the globe to help their employees manage anxieties and work-related stress. I wish more and more employers think about this in the immediate future. Allotting a holiday on the 3rd Fridays to take care of ourselves, our hobbies, loved ones, pets and friends reminds us that we are real people with real lives.
With this in place, SignEasy is quickly witnessing a focussed and new-age way of working style, while not losing sight of consistent communication and collaboration between teams.

As a closing remark, I'd like to add that it may not always be about spending more time at your desks. With changing times, organizations need to move towards an output, and an ownership driven culture - This will help stay relevant with the times and your people will appreciate you for being inclusive. If you have WFH specific policies, such as home office set-up allowances, allow employees to claim for their plant and lamp purchase bills too, if that makes them happy. Working hours (and more working hours) should come from a happy place for an employee as their own choice, rather than an imposing way of work. When an employee says they are busy, it could also mean that they are just taking deep breathes to relieve their stress! Give them the flexibility, give them the time to breathe, and most importantly, let them have an additional day to recharge. Reducing employee burnout could mean you win their constant loyalty, productivity, and willingness to go the extra mile.
Many of you might have heard about such initiatives, but it does take some grit to put the practice in motion which has not been widely executed. Signing off, I'd wish for more leaders to come up with such small changes that can lead to a big, positive impact within their organizations.

4yNeed of the hour for sure ! Burn outs are real and we need to deal sooner than later. Good step in the right direction. I think another add on will be humanizing interactions every once in a while to enjoy everyone’s presence.
