A thankful (re)post

A thankful (re)post

I found this post from 4 years ago. It was sent right before Thanksgiving, November 2019. 3 months later things started to change and kept changing. 4 years later so many things have reverted back to the normal we knew and took for granted which alone is enough to be thankful for but in this age of sequels, reboots and spinoffs I thought a refreshed post was timely:

11.27.2019 (and 11.22.2023 with some edits and additions)

Today I am going to share some business people I am thankful for over my career. Not a complete list by any means just a bunch of names floating around my head often and all that had an effect on my career and my personal growth:

Thomas Nally you hired me fresh out of school and got me on the desk, trading, and managing people pretty quickly.

Jim Erickson my first manager taught me how not to use the mouse and made me learn to listen hard when taking orders as I was fearful of buying instead of selling or trading the wrong symbol.

Angelo Oddo, CFP® my first work friend, we started the same day, became friends, but stayed competitive. You pushed me to work harder to keep up.

Don T. Camillo - took a shot on me at an investment bank, but the dot com bubble burst our aspirations to be a “a discount broker on steroids”.

Stephen Blatney - pressed me to get into sales and showed me a commission job was not that scary.

William Yeh - one of my first big trading clients. You always welcomed me into your office, listened to my pitch, and were the first client I got to the mega ISLD tier.

Matthew Karcic– my first buyside client. Yes, I am the only guy on Wall Street to get promoted and leave the buyside to cover the sell side!

Richard Wilkins - you were the first (and only, knock on wood) guy to fire me. You taught me the game of numbers and loyalty. Second place never stung so much!

Ron Pasternak - the first “big” guy I covered at Island. You swung a hard stick, scared the hell out of me, but were fair and honest.

Robert Gasser – you hired me 2x, say no more!

Nicholas Otte - When we met we both felt like we already knew each other for a lifetime. Always good for a market structure debate and a unique perspective on industry events.

Eugene Choe / Jennifer Pyrka Turner – my first real sell-side algo competition. It was good fun being the only two firms that were selling algos to brokers. Imagine what would have happened if YOU didn’t break 50 mils.

Patrick Gilchrist – you opened your client relationships to me and together we went out and sold a ton of Slica's (that’s NYFIX talk for smart router).

Bill Yancey – a great leader and listener that allowed me to move out of my execution sweet spot and expand my horizons. You supported all my mistakes along the way.

Drew Krichman – you’ve been a friend, competitor, and client throughout. Always a good ear and sometimes you even have something profound to say.

Jamie Selway – we were friends first, then you were my boss, and there were plenty of times we fought like brothers where I was sure my key card wouldn’t work in the AM. It always did!

Terence Dolce you are a legend and welcomed me into ITG, you are and always will be Positboy.

Rajendra Jain - You were the technical enabler of so much of what we wanted to accomplish and a great partner in the business

Douglas Engmann – SAGE chairman and founder. You hired me to run your baby and were a great supporter and mentor to me. You continue to prove the value of long term relationships.

Sean Malloy – My business partner for 3 jobs and more then ½ my career. You are an example of how selflessness helped create a lasting and successful partnership.

Stephen Kay - I still can't believe you only started in the business in 2005! Always a guy in the know, always good for a nug of info on something brewing and the oldest first Phan I know.

Sage Trader team 2020 – thanks for putting up with me, and all my nuances. It was my goal to make sure you all were invited to join Clear Street after the transaction, which happend!

Bryan Harkins - We've done a lot of business together and tried to do a lot more and you've always been a friend, believer, sounding board, and faster runner then me.

Tony Barral - The ultimate connector. You are the Kevin Bacon of electronic trading, the glue that keeps us all connected.

Keith Fortier - The best trading desk coverage and business manager I know. We built some nice business together and you were always there to solve the problem.

Elli Ausubel - A leader, operator, and advocate. While my time with you was shorter then expected, I appreciated your advice, perspective , and the Sunday AM zooms.

Corey Fisher - while only a short time, we were fast friends, saw eye to eye on so many things and you reminded me that good guys in Chicago still exist!

John Hellier Matthew Weitz Peter Giordano and my current business colleagues- Thanks for partnering with me, teaching me the ropes of the organization, and reminding me what long term strategy and a great work environment looks like. To continued successes for all of us.

@compliance – all my compliance colleagues who help navigate the increasing complex world of trading, execution and clearing. I have always considered you partners in the process.

@thelesshonest - for teaching me to see thru the noise and reminding me always the person I didn’t want to be.

@myindustrymusiclovingfriends - Thanks for liking my posts and connecting with me on that front. Let's continue to make sure people realize the value of personalizing business.

@thefuture - may it continue to be as rewarding, allow for continued personal and professional growth and learning and be surrounded by great people and ideas.

Same song from 2019,

“Take time to give thanks, make time to be giving

I'm gonna stop and think twice about the way that I'm living

Did I say a kind word, am I proud of my actions

You know a job well done gives me satisfaction"

-Keith Moseley, The String Cheese Incident
