Dear Col Md. Afzal Hossain,

Assalamualaiqum. I was never so formal to address and greet you like this! I was never absent from Face Book for so long time since I started using. I always noticed in the past that you were one of those rare face book friends who always used to "Like" or "Comment" against my status or post. But it is so difficult for me to believe that I won't feel your presence anymore against my activities, won't even response to my writing to you. I won't even listen anymore your short sentences, "he Bulda Call disila? Conference a silam. Joruri kisu thakle taratari bolo, aro ekta presentation ase, ta na hole ami bashay jeye phone dibo". You were so informal with me but made me so formal now. Your wife called me first from Bogra Cantonment to Mirpur DOHS Dhaka by crying and saying, "Bulda Nihaler baba kemon jeno kortese!” So much confidence your wife had on me that possibly I would be the best person to do whatever needed to be done during emergency. I was prompt to call and request Brig Gen Shamim Kamal, your first neighbor and my two times unit officer, who was also very prompt to run up to your bed room cum residential office which I could see only after your departure. Your course mate Brig Gen Mahbub also came at the same time whom you invited 15 or 20 minutes earlier for having dinner with you. Your next door neighbor Col Sadeque, Chief Instructor, NCO's Academy, was already trying to take you to Bogra Cantonment Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Your Eldest brother Brig Gen (Retd) Mosharrof, Professor of Physiology, being informed by me, have also started coordinating with Bogra CMH so that emergency doctors in ICU remain prepare to receive you. But must you have to depart instantly without giving any of us to try our best? According to cell phone message memory details, you talked to one of the Commanding Officers at 2159 hrs, 15th May 1016 while your wife called me at 2209 hrs. Within this short time, three of your brother officers found you unconscious. Was your call from the Almighty (who created and sent you to this world) so unnoticed and urgent? Doctors tried their best for long time with the strongest as well as rarest hope to bring you back. All your dearest senior and junior colleagues including the General Officer Commanding rushed to the hospital instantly and were present beside you, all your relatives, friends and known persons also came to know instantly and had been praying for you. Must you have to leave all of us even without telling a single sentence? Didn't you have the little moment to express about your sudden suffering even to your beloved wife who was reading religious book sitting beside you? You showed her the photo of your elder son by saying, "Dekheso, Nihaler face book post e kotota like ebong kotota comment porese”? You have also read one of the comments for his mother’s satisfaction but when his mother requested you to read few more, you replied, “onek comments, tumi pore pore nio”. Keeping that photo open in front of you, must you had to depart so instantly even without telling your two sons who were at Mirzapur Cadet College then?

I along with our eldest brother and his wife started for Bogra before mid night. Group Captain Zahid, your immediate elder, and his wife also wanted to accompany you but by then we knew that you are already in another world! So we decided to let them stay at Dhaka to coordinate and arrange other formalities for your unexpected funeral ceremony. Your beloved Bangladesh Army honored you with formal ceremonial funeral burial in a military way. So much crying out of ceremonial uniforms!  So many formal salutes including gun salutes! So much tributes and duas from your beloved known and unknown persons!!! We all are very proud of those and would remain thankful to the authority lifelong but this was not what we were waiting for. All my face book fans, specially whom I used to teach Chinese online maximum time of day and night, noticed my unexpected and unnoticed absence from the normal activities and started calling me over cell phone by asking what has gone wrong with me but I could not tell anyone that “I could not start my crying yet!!” So, I thought of writing this letter to you first to bring normalcy in my daily life.

Dear Polash, I was planning to celebrate your next possible promotion to the rank of Brigadier General for which you already prepared your career. I was also planning to make you surprise by making you life member of Cadet College Club Limited when you would be posted in Dhaka again. Did you come to know that something like this might happen in your life when you posted that Bengali quotation of famous Imam Gazzali before two months on your face book wall (translation: What is decided for you would come to you even if that is under two mountains, again it won’t belong to you even if something is present between your two lips if that is not earmarked for you)? You always preferred your posting outside Dhaka. Is it that you wanted to depart from this world remaining away from all of us? Do you remember our those days of staying in the same Rozonigondha Residential area in side by side family quarters? Do you remember how I taught your both sons to swim in the deep water at Army Swimming Pool? I assure you that I will also help your both sons and their mother to swim in the society in the best possible way until I join you by the call of The Almighty.

My Dear Youngest Brother, Are you reading all the writings related to you in face book? Are you aware of all our prayers for you?  I have retired from the army after 25+ years of ground service thinking that you would continue. We encouraged Capt Nowfil Hossain, only son of our eldest brother Brig Gen (Retd) Md Mosharrof Hossain, to join army thinking that he would be beside you and would also enjoy the shadow under your umbrella. Your eldest son Cadet Ahsan Nihal was also preparing himself to join Bangladesh Army and serve under your command some day. Must you have to also leave this army after serving similar number of years like me so suddenly? I have something else to talk to you. But I know you won’t come back again to hear our unspoken words. However, please come to my dream at least once so that I can greet you as Brigadier General from my personal as well as from our family behalf for which you had been working so hard professionally. May The Almighty Allah reward and decorate you in His best possible desire. Ameen. Your dear Bulda (Lt Col, Md Shahadat Hossain, retd, on behalf of your beloved greater family).
