THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The other day, I was walking through our screened-in porch at the ranch and I glanced at a side table. There was the last remaining coaster from a set we had received as a gift many years ago, each with a humorous quote printed on top.

At first, I smiled as I read, “What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?” It seemed silly but still it made me chuckle at the thought of it. In case you don’t recall the childhood participatory song, it goes like this: "You put your right foot in. You put your right foot out. You put your right foot in, and you shake it all about. You do the Hokey Pokey, and you turn it all around. That's what it's all about..."

The song dates back to 1800s in Ireland, and the words were updated through the years. While there are several origin stories, the song we all know and love started in 1857. Two sisters from Canterbury, England, apparently taught this song to locals while on a trip to Bridgewater, New Hampshire.

Most of us spend at least some, and maybe a lot, of time trying to figure out what life is all about, and more specifically, our purpose in the overall scheme of things. Finding our purpose and acting on it is one of the most important and satisfying things we can do. Focusing on our strengths and using them to make things happen for good is our highest and best use, in my opinion.

Not to minimize the significance of finding the meaning of life, but perhaps we should not take ourselves so seriously. Find the humor in each day, because who knows? Maybe the Hokey Pokey really is what it is all about!

Putting my right foot in,
