If A Theme Works, Dream Up “Like Versions!”
Let me tell you a story about a number of opportunities going begging.
One of the best known and iconic gated communities in Australia, Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast, runs a wildly successful International Boat Show every year.
It has been going for many years now and traditionally draws over 50,000 attendees from around Australia and overseas.
If you’re the least bit interested in boats, this is the show for you.
The crazy thing is, I’ve heard that until recently, no attempt whatsoever had ever been made to collect name and contact details of the 50,000 attendees.
Can you believe that? Fifty thousand people who have shown an interest in coming to the Gold Coast and visiting a Boat Show – and until it was highlighted to the organisers, no one ever considered collecting a database.
That aside, I’m amazed that the owners of Sanctuary Cove do not consider other upmarket festivals or expos which would attract similar crowds.
One of the unique features of Sanctuary Cove is its vibrant village of restaurants, cafes, wine bars and high-end fashion outlets.
However, because the Sanctuary Cove Village is not located on the mainstream tourist strips on the Gold Coast, it probably doesn’t get its fair share of tourism traffic.
Therefore, I scratch my head and wonder why the owners of Sanctuary Cove don’t consider other festivals and expos which would attract custom for the Village tenants.
Given the ongoing success of the International Boat Show, why wouldn’t they consider:
· A Classic Prestige Car Show – featuring Aston Martins, Porches, Lamborghinis, Mustangs, Rolls Royce’s, Mercedes, Ferraris and BMW’s etc?
· Exquisite Food and Wine Expo?
· The biggest Flower and Garden Show in Australia?
· New Orleans Jazz Festival or Mardi Gras?
· German Octoberfest?
· A Winter Snowfest in July and August, where it would snow every night in the Village?
(Yes, believe it or not, it’s not that hard to organise fake snow bubbles to fall down from the tops of buildings! There are companies that specialise in providing this fantastic attraction.)

I highlight these opportunities because I think the Sanctuary Cove scenario is a classic case of someone doing something very right once a year, but then not considering the possible extensions thereafter.
To me, it’s an opportunity staring you right in the face!
So if your business has a successful event once or twice a year, put your thinking cap on and consider other variations of that theme.
It’s the old story of having a proven “model” and then simply duplicating it with a new twist!
