The Things Keeping Your Unemployment Job Search Slow (and how to overcome them)

The Things Keeping Your Unemployment Job Search Slow (and how to overcome them)

I run polls on LinkedIn to get a clear idea of the problems job seekers are facing right now, so I can write about the job search topics you care most about.

About a month ago, I ran a poll to ask unemployed job seekers: "What Do You Think Is Keeping Your Unemployment Job Search Slow?"

Here were the top 3 responses, and how to overcome each one in your unemployment job search:

  1. Blocked By ATS (53%): If you're being blocked by Applicant Tracking Systems, then stop applying through resume screening databases. Your resume is screened by ATSs when you: Apply online through job boards/company career pages/LinkedIn, apply through HR, apply through recruiters (internal and external even in response to a recruiter reaching out to you), network to jobs after they've been posted anywhere (even internally). You'll want to learn how to improve your job search process to get around ATSs, because when you aren't getting through ATSs, they're working against you, not for you.
  2. Bias Against Unemployed (33%): Give employers the impression that you're head and shoulders above average, far beyond just qualified (but not overqualified). Employers see risk in unemployed candidates (were you let go for average/below average performance, or for cause?). Unemployed job seekers who don't recognize and mitigate this risk suffer in their job search. You have to prove you're better than average/qualified to overcome unemployment risk from the hiring manager's point of view.
  3. Don't Know How To Make Faster (14%): Well, how is doing more of the same things that aren't working making your unemployment job search faster?

These are all problems you can overcome and make your unemployment job search faster, but few career resources teach them.

I can show you what to differently to fix your resume and job search, to help you prevent a long unemployment job search. I'll teach you how to make your resume/job search strategy sync with employer hiring processes, and how to recognize the bad advice that's keeping you unemployed.
