Think Big - Pitch Confidently - Prove Them Wrong!
Something new is coming and thanks to Paula Taylor and the WestTechFest team, we were invited to steal the final minutes of this morning's inaugural WestTechWA Women breakfast event to share a sneak peek with the 400+ audience in the room. For anyone who did not get a chance to come along or perhaps had to rush off beforehand, here is a replay of what you missed.
As with all good pitches, let's start by stating the problem. Although women represent just over half of the population in Australia, when it comes to innovation and entrepreneurship we make up less than 35% of all entrepreneurs in this country. It is a much-lamented and frustratingly well-documented fact that women remain under-represented, under-supported and continue to seriously struggle to secure investment for their ventures at the same rate as their male counterparts.
In the past 4 years, companies founded solely by women attracted just over 4% of all private investment in Australia.*
What's even more disheartening, if that's even possible, is that the problem isn’t going away - in fact, depending on which research you follow, it appears to be a growing one! In the last financial year, private investment in woman-led or mixed-gender teams actually appears to have declined.
Now the traditional investor market in Australia is pretty comfortable when it comes to spotting an opportunity in investing in minerals and resources. So if we discovered a new gold deposit, would we only mine half of the deposit? If we planted a large field of crops, would we only harvest half at the end of the season? The answer is clearly no – so why do we continue to disregard such an incredibly large source of innovation and investment opportunities when it comes to women in entrepreneurship?
Time and time again research demonstrates that if women and men around the world participated equally as entrepreneurs, the global GDP could ultimately rise by up to 6%, boosting our global economy by an incredible $5 trillion.**
If the current system was working the numbers would show it. So what can be done?
Our contention (backed up by some seriously clever researchers), is that we have to focus on 4 key areas.
So something needs to change because the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. I’m pretty sure most women will agree that they are well and truly over being asked or surveyed about what we would like to see happen to make things better.
Actions speak louder than words!
They say actions speak louder than words, so I am delighted to share with you our solution to the challenges encountered. On behalf of my 4 fabulously talented and fearless co-founders, Sheryl Frame, Tracie Clark, Justine Teggelove and Stephanie Rowland, I am proud to introduce you to VentureX HQ - a dynamic, inclusive and educational network strategically designed for women and led by women.
L to R: Tracie Clark, Stephanie Rowland, Justine Teggelove, Sheryl Frame, Pia Turcinov
Wondering about the name?
Venture can be defined both as a noun and a verb. As a noun, it denotes a risky or daring journey or undertaking, but as a verb, it references to dare to do something that may be considered audacious. I will leave it to you to join the dots between the notion of risk and audaciousness in the context of both women and entrepreneurship.
X is hopefully somewhat obviously a multiplier and when it comes to the HQ, forget about Head Quarters – think Higher Quotient - indicating our mission to nurture a greater number of women scaling their ventures AND investing in innovation.
In essence, what we want, is to turn our female human capital into one of the key competitive advantages for our State and indeed for this country!
What will success look like?
Success will mean more business ventures, scaleups and unicorns founded and led by women providing different perspectives and different solutions to the challenges and opportunities the world is facing. That is what we believe innovation is all about.
So, who is this network for?
A direct result of our work will be to positively influence investor sentiment and change the preconceptions and system biases women encounter as founders and business owners, by connecting the broader traditional investor community to investment-ready female-led ventures. And to top it all off the overall result is a win-win for all as we work on enhancing the overall investment pool by encouraging more women to invest in start-ups and scalable ventures.
Why us?
Because we come from a lived experience of being a woman in business and want other women to benefit from the lessons we have learnt, the connections we have forged and the doors we have opened. As female founders, businesswomen, directors, investors, mentors, and mothers, we have witnessed, experienced and listened to too many stories of the inequities and presumptions made about women in business and in life. It is this common lived experience that has galvanized us to stand up and act.
We have started, scaled and exited ventures, have tasted success as well as failure, have raised investment and invested in others, have advised, supported, mentored and advocated many, many entrepreneurs and innovators from all walks of life and across divergent industries.
But most importantly, we are doing this because it is because this is something we fiercely and unequivocally believe in. We are passionate about the incredible opportunities that investing in this growing, high performing but still woefully under-resourced and under-estimated sector of the market, offers.
So what's our ask?
They say, always close your pitch with an ask! Formal membership registrations will open in February 2022 with membership including access to our InvestABLE Program, resources, curated education sessions, one-on-one mentoring and access to that human capital, social capital and all-important financial capital, we spoke about before.
If you are a woman and interested in either of our 2 key cohorts of FOUNDER or INVESTOR, the VentureX HQ Network is for you!
Now please know that this is just as much an invitation and a call to action to men to come alongside, collaborate and help us shift the paradigm.
As investors, directors, advisors, mentors and advocates you continue to have a significant role to play and can act as an additional lever to accelerate change. Not to mention the potential for you to access some exciting new business opportunities!
Lastly, if this makes sound business sense and aligns with your corporate brand, vision and values, please reach out and explore with us how your organisation can support, partner and amplify the rate of change we are looking to effect. We have a range of Foundation Partnerships and Sponsorships available.
