THINK OF YOUR MIND AS BEING LIKE A SNOW GLOBE
The nature of human beings is to be well – not unhappy, depressed, anxious and non-present. Being well is our default setting.
Given it’s the festive season, think of your mind as being like a ‘Snow Globe’ and your thoughts as being like the glitter in the globe. Our natural resting position is a clear Snow Globe. The nature of the water in the globe is clear – you don’t have to do anything to make it clear - it is clear all by itself.
When we get agitated, anxious, fearful, worried we are simply shaking the snow globe and before we know it out mind is full of glitter. There is so much glitter you just don’t know what to do, you feel overwhelmed, over worked and stressed. Lots of thoughts lead to heightened anxiety.
But there is a very simple answer to get back to normal, back to the default position.
We make the globe clear again by leaving it alone and letting it settle. And as it settles you find clarity.
Similarly with our mind, we let our thoughts settle by taking time to sit quietly and meditate.
Our default of a calm mind is where we return to when not getting pulled around by thought. The more clarity with our experiences we want the calmer we need to be with thought.
A calm you is where the best version of you hangs out. The best version of you – when you’re not getting in your own way. The best you can be Is the best you.
STEPS YOU CAN TAKE
Here are just a few examples of how you can calm your mind and be mindful in every situation you find yourself in. By doing this, you start to control how you react to the things that happen to you. I’ve tried all of these and they work.
- Drinking tea or coffee: Smell and examine your tea or coffee before taking a slow sip. Close your eyes and wholly feel and taste the liquid on your tongue before swallowing. Feel the warmth of the cup in your hands.
- Taking a shower: Think about what the water feels like as it hits your skin.
- Scanning your body: Take a moment to close your eyes and tune into your body. Start at your toes and move up, observing each body part until you reach the top of your head. Be curious about what you find, noticing any tension, lightness, heat, pain or other sensations. Notice if the mind wanders and creates stories about those feelings. If so, see if you can bring the mind back to the sensations without judging them.
- Sunrise or sunset: Take in the unique colours and try to notice something you’ve never spotted before. Is there a cloud shape that reminds you of something or someone? What colours do you see? How does the air temperature change once the sun dips below the horizon?
