Are you thinking of changing roles? 🤔 Do this first.
Changing roles is a big decision.
It comes with a lot of risk, as well as upside.
But, if you're stressed, burnt out, unhappy, lacking growth or have fallen out of love with the business, it can be the right thing to think about doing.
Searching for a new role on top of doing the one your currently in though is no easy feat.
Many people rush it.
Make rash decisions and end up regretting it.
🙋🏼♂️ I've been there.
So, before you go and hand in your notice, here's some things to seriously think about...
Discuss your options 💬
If you can, sit down with your manager and talk about why you're considering leaving.
Be honest.
If your manager has your best interests at heart (and they should), they'll give you the time and space to talk.
What you're unhappy with may be able to be resolved.
There may be other options for you within the company you're currently at.
They may be able to help you find a new role.
Just talking about it may make the situation easier.
Honesty is always the best policy here, and if you do choose to leave, you'll end up leaving on much better terms.
Do your research 🔍
As much as we'd all love companies to be completely transparent and open, they rarely are.
So before making any moves, research as thoroughly as possible, and do strict comparisons.
Draw up a shortlist of pro's and cons.
Work out what you want and need from a business, and give the businesses you're looking at a 'pass mark'.
If they don't meet 80-90% of your requirements, they're probably not for you.
When I was searching in the summer of 2022, I put together this spreadsheet, with the details of everything that was important to me for the companies I was looking at. [many details have been removed as for some I was under NDA]
Talk to your network ☎️
Your network is your net worth.
Talk to your connections, friends, family and ex-colleagues.
See what opportunities are open with them.
Discuss the situation you're in, and what you want from a new role.
Use them for advice, introductions and as a sounding board.
Your network can be one of the most powerful tools in your arsenal, and can make moving roles a lot easier.
If you know someone in a business, make sure you leverage the connection, and either use them as a source of truth into what the company is like, or ask them to introduce you and vouch for you if they will.
Build your personal brand 🎙️
Looking for a job in 2023 is not about sending out CVs 🙈
It's about who you know, and what you're known for.
This means building your personal brand.
Getting out there and talking about what you're passionate about.
Becoming known for a topic.
Building your network through content.

This is what stands you out from others and will get your noticed.
Not a CV you've designed in Canva.
There's more I could add to this, but this is my go-to to start with.
I also did a post on this last week, with some questions everyone should ask themselves before they change roles 👇🏼
🔍 Under the Spotlight - Deel
Deel is an HR platform taking the world by storm. They make managing a global team easy by equipping teams with the tools, features, and guidance they need in a single platform to eliminate hiring and management borders 🌍
Being a product that enables remote and flexible working, they take it pretty seriously themselves, with a mission to create a new world of work!
What I love ❤️:
💡 Their team is in 88 countries (and counting). They are truly remote first and recognise that not everyone wants to working at home or in an office all the time.
💡 Despite being remote first, Deel understand the importance of in-person meet ups, with team mates from around the globe regularly getting together, either for organised events or just to meet other colleagues who happen to be based in the same country.
💡 Flexible working hours. Not everyone does their best work at 9am. Depending on teams, teammates at Deel are able to flex their working hours to best suit them.
