In our industry alone, the statistics for construction waste are alarming – 40% of Class 1 landfills filled with construction waste and the dumping of 17,000 tonnes of waste per day.

This highlights the urgency for change.

With the rise of hybrid working and the consequent reimagining of office spaces, it is crucial that we incorporate a Design and Construction Sustainability ESG strategy into our workplace strategies.

This strategy encompasses various aspects of sustainability, including materials selection, supply chain transparency in relation to carbon emissions and waste, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I).

In addition, I believe we must ensure that construction projects are executed with sustainability in mind, utilising construction logistics methodologies that prioritise environmental considerations. And it is essential to foster safe spaces for DE&I and women on construction sites, making the industry more inclusive and representative.

From a Spaceworks perspective, we understand that sustainability encompasses more than just the environmental aspect. It is a comprehensive approach that requires us to address social, economic, and environmental dimensions. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional workplace strategy services while incorporating a robust Design and Construction Sustainability ESG strategy.

One of the valuable tools we use to measure the environmental impact of our sustainability strategy is the Spaceworks carbon calculator. In our initial projects we achieved around a 40% reduction in embodied carbon emissions. By implementing reduction strategies at the design stage and continuously tracking and measuring environmental performance throughout the project lifecycle, our clients can have their fitout certified as Net Carbon Zero.

I was thrilled to share these initiatives with the attendees at the summit, as our team is truly passionate about driving sustainability and effecting positive change in the design and fitout sector. Together, let's make a difference and create a more sustainable future.
