Third Edition: Aligning Workforce Goals: Unity In Purpose

It's been a busy week of International Women's Day focus! Joining the UNWomen UK delegation this year is an honour and requires a laser focus on my top priorities right now. One of which is this newsletter, so welcome back to the third edition of Leveling Up.

I'm thrilled to see such a passionate interest in transforming HR and leadership!

Turning Vision into Reality

Building on last edition's focus on Strategic and Operational Clarity, I am delving into the next two core pillars of strategic HR: Aligning Workforce Goals and Developing Winning Cultures. These pillars are so important in transforming not just how we lead, but how our organisations thrive in an ever-changing business landscape.

Aligning Workforce Goals: Unity in Purpose

Strategic alignment goes beyond having everyone rowing in the same direction. It's about ensuring that each stroke is powerful, purposeful, and perfectly timed with the company's overarching goals. This unity in purpose propels the organisation forward, with every team member clear on how their role contributes to the bigger picture. This is what employees consistently say they want to be a part of. It's belonging, and it's about going to work and feeling like you make a difference.

The biggest challenges, missed opportunities and most serious mistakes I have experienced in organisations have been the result of weak collaboration or misaligned objectives.

🔍 Actionable Insight: Begin by transparently sharing the company's strategic objectives with all team members. Then, collaboratively set individual and team goals that ladder up to these objectives. Use regular check-ins not just as progress updates, but as opportunities to realign, reenergise, and recognise peoples contributions. So often we just go through the motions of this. Don't miss this micro-opportunity to develop your relationships further and build your team culture.

A winning culture should be like fertile soil in which innovative ideas, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging grow. It's about creating an environment where individuals are not just satisfied but are truly thriving - intellectually, emotionally, and professionally.

Culture is built on shared values and practices but thrives on diversity and inclusion. It respects every individual's contribution while fostering a sense of collective achievement. In such cultures, employees are more than just participants; they are co-creators of their work environment.

🌱 Strategic Tip: Embed your organisation's values into every aspect of the employee journey, from hiring to retirement. Talk about company values often, don’t leave them behind on a PowerPoint slide. Celebrate successes, learn from failures together, and encourage a mindset of continuous improvement. Work on culture continuously and systematically not just as a one off event after the results of your employee opinion survey.

Remember, culture is caught, not taught, so lead by example!

Pixar's commitment to a collaborative and inclusive work environment has not only resulted in unparalleled creative success but also in an enduring legacy of innovation and employee engagement. By valuing every voice in the room, Pixar has created a culture where imagination and creativity flourish, driving the company to new heights of success.

The Pixar Braintrust is the studio's pioneering method for fostering creativity and resolving project challenges. It brings together an experienced team of Pixar's directors, writers, and animators to offer direct, constructive feedback during a project's development phases.

The core of the Braintrust approach lies in its culture of open, honest communication, where feedback is project-focused, promoting a non-personal critique environment that encourages creative discussion. Uniquely, the Braintrust functions as a collaborative problem-solving entity, not just a critique group. It leverages collective experience in storytelling and animation to brainstorm solutions to narrative or character issues, enhancing Pixar's ability to create successful.

Looking Ahead

The transition to strategic HR excellence is ongoing as we continue to navigate the complexities of today's work environment. Remember that the investment you make in aligning workforce goals and developing a winning culture is an investment in the future of your organisation.
