The Three Questions #4 - Tiago Forjaz - Portuguese Leaders
🤝 Sponsored By The Recruiters Gang
This edition is sponsored by The Recruiters Gang, a global and free recruitment community. There´s no real-time and centralized recruitment support out there – that can help recruitment professionals, for real. You have your internal company resources, but what if you could learn from others, like you? That's why we are creating The Recruiters Gang, a free, safe space where recruiters from different areas and countries meet. Share, Learn, Support. 🙂

☝️First things first
Ho ho ho! Christmas is just around the corner. Did you behave well? It is time to finish the holiday preparations and to reflect a bit. For me, is time to be thankful for the bigger things in life. The holidays are also a great opportunity to give to those less fortunate: did you realize how lucky you are if you have good health, a family to share, a place to live and food to eat? Yes, folks. My suggestion is for you to make someone's Christmas a better one, it has much more value than a new iPhone, clothes you don't need, or any material gift . (It really has, sorry for the honesty).
Ok, interesting trends in the talent market, guys:
What Workable insights is saying here? "How the smallest bucket – the one with 1-50 FTEs – is growing significantly, with four straight months of increasing job activity starting with 3.1 job postings per business in August up to 4.2 job postings per business in November. That’s more than one extra job posting per business on average." Simplifying: the big dogs are laying off and hiring less (Meta, Amazon and Twitter are the most prominent, followed by Carvana, Doordash, Stripe), while the smaller companies are also being affected, but some are growing and adapting fast.
As this is the last edition of the year, an interesting post from Hung Lee (for me the reference in good and deep content about recruitment) summarizes well what happened in 2022:
Do you agree with him? I would say that point 20 is quite interesting! Our clients are still struggling to find talent and HR professionals available or interested in changing, EVEN with the recent talent professional layoffs, curious, no? Are you guys still receiving many offers? I hope so!
Guys, this is probably the last issue of the year, so I wanted to thank you for subscribing, and say that I'm really enjoying my time writing it, among all the other things I have to do. I also know that some people read and don't interact: please! give a like, share with someone, if you think it's worth it - your support is fuel for us to keep going.
So enjoy family, Christmas, and have an amazing 2023!

1. Tiago, you´ve seen many transformations within the HR, Talent space. Remote work was science fiction 20 years, ago and we printed cv´s. How has technology changed the way people deal with work and their careers? Is the word career dead?
I don't think the word career is dead, but its meaning has evolved. The word stems from Latin and it only means "path", so I think it will remain, however people will obviously make a lot more stop-overs on the journey. Technology has enabled people to work from anywhere and it has allowed people to liberate themselves and realize how much power they have in a global market. It is still shy and many people still believe that now that everyone feels COVID safe work needs to get back to the old days. I believe that the epidemic created a great divide and amplified the difference between digital companies with a digital-proof culture and those who still depend heavily on command and control.
2. The salaries in Portugal are low compared to other countries, fact, and recently, the cost of living is getting higher. How do you see the Portuguese talent ecosystem, with so many new offers from international companies? How can pt companies stay competitive?
Portuguese companies, and companies in the Portuguese market have made the most of cheap and qualified talent, but now things are changing because these people have an open perspective to work. Some work from Portugal and serve other countries while others are deciding on leaving. But I think the real issue behind our failure of making good use of our talent pool is mostly because the Portuguese market (Portuguese companies and international ones) don't hire international talents that are studying in Portugal. Many of them enjoy the country and their lifestyle so much that I truly believe that they would stay if they got interesting jobs (despite the low salaries). In short, I think we are very hospitable, but not very inclusive of international talent and that is a big problem that we have to solve.

3. You work with leadership development and are always on top of trends. What are the competencies and careers of the future?
That is a great question, actually, it's one that I and my company ( The Epic Talent Society ) are committed to answering, but I don't want to be opinionated about it, I think we need to base our perspectives on data. In a time where we understand that we need to learn continuously and the market is fluid, I think we need to rethink our career strategies and reflect yearly on what are the career paths of the future and the critical skills to permanently transition to greener pastures. I could elaborate, but not prove my point of view, so I think I'll pass on this one.
