Three Questions Series: #6

With Sue Wade, Global Learning and Development Management Expert at Royal Boon Edam International

📌 What's one thing you're most excited about around the future of work and learning?

Sue: “Experience” is a much used buzzword at the moment whether that be regarding learning or talent platforms.  Gemma Critchley led an inspiring session on Experience Design a while back which I was lucky enough to attend. I have enjoyed leading some learning experiences in the last few years that have demonstrated that “LX” can be a powerful tool and should not be limited to only existing in a “Platform”!

I am also very interested by the idea of curated content right now. With an e-learning sometimes taking a considerable amount of time to create, it is worth taking a look at ways to bring existing content into your learning environment in an effective and immediate way.

If I want to learn how to do something, the first place I go to is the internet and not to a fixed content source that has been pre-defined by someone who thinks that they know what I want to know. If we can bring that sort of content into our learning sphere without taking people out of their workflow or learning environment then that is a big win for learning in my opinion.

That’s two things……….oops!

📌What's your approach to your own learning/self-development?

Sue: I love self-learning inspired by conferences, connections, articles on LinkedIn and those numerous newsletters that tend to find their way into our inboxes. I like to disappear down a rabbit hole every now and again and not quite know where I will end up. It is a strategy that has led me to some interesting conversations and contemplation and helps to guide the shape of my own philosophy on learning.

I am still trying to figure out how best to structure this way of learning!

📌 What's your current favorite learning-related resource, writer/speaker, anecdote or quote?

Sue: At Learning Tech 2019 David Kelly talked about taking a closer look at how we live and not how we learn to help us decide how to gain knowledge which I found a really useful perspective. Even the most creative content will not deliver if it is not able to be accessed in an easy and appealing way that is in-the-moment.

As for a quote; I am not sure who said it better, but I am big believer in the practical application of learning;

 “I hear I forget, I see I remember, I do I understand.” -- Confucious

 “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -- Benjamin Franklin

Thanks Sue!
