The Three Reasons Your Social Media Efforts Are Not Bringing You Clients

"I just don't know what to write"... "I hate putting myself out there"... "People will get bored of me keep posting every single day"... "Nobody reads what I writer anyway!"...

These are all things I hear from Coaches and Consultants almost every single day. They all know social media is a very useful tool to attract clients to them, to get the word out there that they exist and can help them, but how to actually do that successfully feels impossible!

Yet in many cases they keep going. Keep writing posts that may or may not land with their ideal clients. Quite often I go and look at their posts and I can see why things are not working for them. It is normally one of three reasons - or all three combined.

1. The content of the posts are all wrong

Now I am not saying this is in a judgy way. However I have reached a point where I can spot a good post from not so good. That isn't to say the content of many of the less good posts isn't interesting, it very often is. However, it isn't the content that the poster's ideal client will stop and realise can help them. Quite often, if you are posting about the process of coaching - how brilliant it is and how it can help, the person you want to hear that doesn't even think it applies to them.

At the point of attracting a client, it's vital you step back and consider where they are at right now. Also where do they wish they could be instead? So rather than talking about unearthing values or being more mindful, talking about the problems, challenges, pain points you know your ideal clients have is way more likely to make them stop in their tracks and think "wow, that really sounds like me".

Not every post needs to be doom and gloom and all about pain points - you can talk about what you know they would to have in their lives instead - their desired alternative outcome to those pain points. Again that will resonate with them as it's something they know they wish for... and hopefully, over time, they will see YOU are the person that can help them achieve that.

What all posts do need to do is to build the know, like and trust factors. My latest podcast episode tells you what my top performing social media posts are if you would like some inspo! Click here to have a listen!

2. A lack of consistency

This is really common - an I get it! It's tough to be consistent, to post regularly and keep showing up, when it feels like tumbleweed. I have been there - thinking, well what's the point?! My posts don't appear to result in any likes, comments, follows, let alone an actual client! When those feelings kick in it's understandable the desire to keep posting and showing up wanes.

But here's the thing. If you are not visible you are guaranteeing nobody will see you. Guaranteeing nobody will decide to work with you. Yes, there are other ways to find clients other than social media (check out my podcast episode on exactly how here), but, if you can use it, why not? It's a free shop window with thousands upon thousands of people walking by. Not all will stop, but if you have the right item in the window for long enough, people will decide to at least go in and take a look around!

Consistency doesn't have to mean posting everyday (although I would recommend it). It might mean three times a week. What it doesn't mean is going all in for two weeks and then disappearing for a month. It also doesn't mean posting and running. Ideally you should engage in the platform in other ways too - scrolling, liking, commenting (authentically!).

3. A small audience that never grows

Several Coaches have said to me, "But I post everyday religiously, but nobody bites!". Then I see their audience on their chosen social media platform is tiny. Now of course, we all have to start somewhere and for many coaches may have come to this career without a large online network, so they are building from the ground up - which is fine! The key being that they are actually building. If your audience stays small, you never put in strategies to grow it, the likelihood of reaching your ideal client - or enough of them - is low to zero.

Linked In is a networking platform. People expect to be connected with. Be brave and invite people into your world! If you choose not to do this (or to increase your audience in other ways), you are choosing to not be seen and therefore choosing to not sell your coaching. Back to the shop analogy, it's like opening a bookstore down a tiny country road where the same 10 people walk by everyday, who have little interest in books. You just wouldn't do that - or if you did, it wouldn't last long!

So today, think about how can you grow your audience? How can you get visible to more ideal clients?

The three mistakes outlined above ALL matter. There is not point doing one well, but not the other two. Great yet inconsistent content, delivered to small stagnant audience, won't land. Content that doesn't stop your ideal clients in their tracks, delivered daily to a large audience, also won't land!

So go and review your profile today. Be honest with yourself - are you consistent? Is your audience growing weekly? Does your content stop people scrolling and have them thinking "It's like they're in my head!". If your answer is no to any of these, make some changes! Remember nothing changes over night, but keep taking care of these three things and I promise you will begin to see glimmers of hope! (Just like my client did last week
