Three Ways to Get the Media to Find You
The media isn’t some secret secluded club as most people seem to imagine. In fact, getting on TV as an expert isn’t all that difficult once you know how.
A perfect example is Juliet Murphy, executive career coach & resume writer. A few years ago, I had the chance to interview her about how CBS came to her to feature her for a story. You can check out the video here.
These are some of the highlights:
Sign up for HARO
HARO (or help a reporter out) is a simple but effective way to get your name out there. Reporters and producers will send out queries for stories they’re working on. When I was a senior producer at Fox News Channel I used this service all the time and found some of my favorite experts this way.
For example, I found natural medicine expert Chris Kilham through a HARO request almost ten years ago and produced hundreds of segments with him through the years.
Juliet regularly responds to HARO queries and she credits HARO for increasing her profile. Taking just a few minutes out of your day to check HARO can quickly lead to being quoted or featured in plenty of media.

Using Yelp and LinkedIn for testimonials
Juliet asks clients to review her services on Yelp and LinkedIn regularly. Because she goes above and beyond for her clients, they are often very appreciative and many are happy to provide testimonials.
This doesn’t just help demonstrate her success to potential clients, but also helps increase her rankings on Google. She’s on the first page when you search “career coach orange county.”

Juliet had a website for some time before she decided to start publishing blog posts. As soon as she started posting, she noticed an increase in traffic to her website and an increase in reporters and producers contacting her.
Having a blog is a visual demonstration of your knowledge in a particular field. If producers are looking at your website, they’ll probably scroll through a few of your recent posts to get a fuller picture of your credentials. Plus, you’ll come up on Google searches for that information.
By combining all of the above, Juliet managed to attract the attention of a producer at CBS. Her advice was featured on the “Face The Truth” talk show with Vivica A. Fox. Plus she got her name and logo out there. I’m so proud of her. To find out more about how Juliet landed such an amazing opportunity check out the interview here.
