Throughput in Wi-Fi 7: 4096 QAM

In our previous blog Supercharging Wi-Fi 7, we explored the significant changes introduced in 802.11be, commonly known as Wi-Fi 7, from the perspective of Latency and Multi-Link Operations (MLO). Let’s now dive into more profound insights regarding the modifications specifically related to the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS).

We used WiCheck Wi-Fi 7 Golden Client Module, to perform Wi-Fi 7 throughput tests.

Peak Throughput 

6.12 Gbps 2*2, Non MLO, Dual Band 6GHz + 5GHz

4.18 Gbps 2*2, Non MLO, Single Band 6GHz

The above test is done in an RF Chamber in a conducive environment. OFDMA is disabled in Wi-Fi 6 and both OFDMA and MLO are disabled in Wi-Fi 7.

The throughputs will get higher as multiple links can be used  when MLO is enabled in good radio conditions. Stay tuned for improvements observed with MLO and multi-band.

New Modulation Scheme

Wi-Fi 7 or 802.11be has introduced a new modulation scheme namely 4096 QAM.

4096 QAM (also called 4K QAM) implies that the QAM uses 4096 points in the constellation, carrying an information of 12 bits per symbol. There are 2 coding rates (¾, ⅚) defined for this modulation scheme. EHT-MCS indices 12 and 13 are used to indicate these new modulation and coding schemes. Using these MCS indices would increase the data rate by up to 20% when compared to the earlier generation of Wi-Fi (802.11ax or Wi-Fi 6). 

Special MCS Indices

There are also MCS indices 14,15 introduced for special purposes. These use BPSK-DCM i.e BPSK dual carrier modulation and are valid for only 1 NSS. BPSK-DCM is mainly used for increasing range and/or interference mitigation

The EHT PHY introduces the EHT DUP mode (duplicate transmission mode) for an EHT SU transmission featuring a solitary spatial stream and LDPC coding, utilizing BPSK-DCM within the 6 GHz band as EHT-MCS 14. This mode replicates the data frequency within the payload section of the PPDU (e.g., 80 MHz DUP = 40 MHz (RU 484) duplication). The EHT DUP mode is exclusively applicable to bandwidths of 80/160/320 MHz and excludes preamble puncturing.

EHT-MCS index 15 uses BPSK-DCM normally.
