Thursday Morning Staffing Shortages! - July 22nd, 2021

We are hearing from more Employers that they are unable to fill their positions. There are immediate needs in Engineering, IT, Office Support and Manufacturing. These shortages of Highly Skilled and Non-Skilled Candidates can be attributed to several things going back several decades.

The Recession of 2007-2012 saw many in the engineering fields lose their jobs. We remember receiving calls from many of our NE. Ohio Fortune 500 HR Managers asking us to take thousands of their laid-off employees and find temporary work for them until things turned around. Of course that would have been great for us if we were not losing 50 to 100 of our Temps a week ourselves. Basically, there was nowhere to place anyone. That Recession resulted in the Universities having few students interested in engineering until the Recovery. The reality is that hundreds of thousands of students that did not pursue engineering as their career choice. Some 10+ years later it has caught up to us.

Federal, State and Local Governments all have 5-10 year plans for nearly everything imaginable. The Federal Government and can project future events based on all types of scenarios as they have access to all of the research and extensive analytic capabilities. The Information on projected Staffing Shortages has been known about for years, however, it was and is not a priority.

If we are ever going to come close to ‘Full Employment’ we will need to forecast what education and training will be required of our future workforce. We have to create Marketing Campaigns directed towards students and people who are unemployed making them aware of employment opportunities if they get the education and training. These programs must be accessible and affordable not completely free. We would rather see some form of a payroll deduction plan that allows people to earn and pay back their educational debt. Getting something for free is less worth than something that is earned. Your thoughts on this subject are WELCOME.
